So the children Gaon takes notice of in the playground. This has got to be a ToQger reference.
Kid with red checkered shirt a nod to ToQ1(Right had a red checkered shirt tied to his waist) Kid with glasses and blue top a nod to ToQ2(Tokatti wore glasses in the show) Kid with yellow striped shirt a nod to ToQ3(Mio wore a striped t-shirt in the show) Kid with green cargos a nod to ToQ4(Hikari wore long cargos in the show) Kid with pink bag and pigtails a nod to ToQ5(Kagura's signature hairstyle was her pigtails)

Apart from the ToQger reference, Hyuuga/Black Knight II of GingaMan is also there. Hence, his mecha is GouTaurus and the robot's name is BullTaurus. And that giant battle-"the grills of hell"-is so awesome with that reference of GouZyuDrill from Gokaiger. But Stacy regained his evil deeds in fighting against the Zenkaigers once again. Another "To Be Continued..." scene, huh?

Somewhere along the line, Gaon became my favorite non-Magine Zenkaiger, and it's kinda hard to say when and how exactly that happened. I mean, I guess episode 7, which also featured character development from him and a prominent appearance by Stacey, is a strong contender if I need to single out a particular moment. But like, even in my post about that episode, I explicitly said he was probably my least favorite of the group, something that's obviously changed since then! It's broader than that; even after I realized I liked him, I wouldn't have immediately put him above everyone else (who isn't Magine), you know? It's been a gradual process, and that's because it seems like the longer the show goes on, the more I keep finding to like about Gaon. At first he was just funny, then I saw those hints of dramatically interesting layers, and now, with this episode, those have gotten a lot bigger than mere hints. I really loved his growth in this one, with an imagined problem he thinks he caused leading to genuine self-reflection and newfound maturity. It highlights a lot of what I've come to appreciate his character and adds on to it, and I especially liked how much of it is rooted in that undercurrent of self-loathing he occasionally displays. He's super ready to beat himself up here, and that less frivolous side of him can be pretty endearing. Not that his issues can excuse a lot of his behavior, but hey, that's the whole conclusion he comes to at the end, so everybody wins! He's not always the most heroic guy around, but whenever Gaon is letting himself get hurt so others don't have to, you can tell why he's part of the team. Still though, it's tough to compete with Magine. There's only one character in this show who can even approach that level of affection from me, and, hey, speaking of, how about Stacey in this one? He seems to be on a fairly straightforward path by this point, but even if they don't throw us any curveballs to spice things up, watching that journey play out continues to be engaging. It's just hard to get tired of Stacey gradually getting pulled more and more into Kaito's whole world through Yatsude and inevitably trying to deny how all those new feelings are complicating his life. Does anyone honestly believe for a second this is actually the last time he'll be dropping by for a snack? It's always a treat when Stacaesar shows up, and all the more so when he brings the giant robot with him. Really glad that thing got fixed! ...Even if it is probably going to need fixing again very soon! All around it's a nice episode, although I'm realizing as I write this how little I have to say about the monster plot. Don't get me wrong, it's totally serviceable, and I especially loved all the inexplicable grills during the giant fight (the use of the Gingaman Gear was also cute), but it's fairly tame by Zenkaiger's standards. This isn't even a complaint so much as it is simply an observation. Certain episodes of this show lean more towards being about the gimmick than others, and this was clearly one where the focus was elsewhere. As always, it's filled to the brim with fun character moments. Secchan staring down Stacey was hilarious (he's really trying to help!), and Zyuran's entire role obviously complements Gaon's quite well, moving their whole dynamic as a duo forward with that high five at the end. This one didn't exactly blow me away, but (and I think I've said something like this before) the fact that I can consider this an "okay" episode of Zenkaiger only demonstrates how high its average is.

It's nice to see Gaon starting to act a little more mature. I also enjoyed that, despite the issue with Kaiju Gear being a misunderstanding, Gaon still completely owned up to how he's been acting.
More Stacey is always welcome, too. He's easily my favorite of the series so far. His interactions with Yatsude are always nice, and Secchan's stare down was adorable. Being torn between enjoying the world and showing up ol' pops, I'm truly most curious about when Stacey's biggest low will occur. Solid episode. Fun villain. Nice character growth. Neat little random mode the toy can just happen to pull off. Can't wait for next episode, though.

I have a lot to say about this episode, but first, here's my obligatory comment about Gears. Gingaman is the only 90s Sentai I haven't watched yet, but Sunred compared it to my second and third favorite 10s Sentai, Goseiger and Ryusoulger, so now I'm planning to watch it after I'm done with Turboranger and Sekai Ninja Sen. However, I know enough from Lost Galaxy to understand the power, even though its use here is very situational.
Moving on to the main course: Gaon being confronted by Juran to make him acknowledge his prejudice should be familiar to a lot of people. At an early age, we don't think very critically, so we just eat up all kinds of destructive stigmata. "You did this to X, but would you do that to Y?" That kind of question really makes a person consider how their own morality might be challenged by those stigmata. Gaon's behavior here is different from Episode 7, where he actually had a point about Kikainoids being more durable than humans and even admitted to Kaito that he considered his fellow Kikainoids as friends. Furthermore, in the Zenkai Red special, he took pride in being a tough Kikainoid, as that gave him more power to protect humans. Here we see him taking Juran's interrogation and not talking back, cause despite Gaon being an a**hole, that's just how we see him from a third person perspective. He believed his treatment of robots was heroic. He didn't see anything wrong with that, considering it justified for how he was treated by Tojitendo. He's not observant enough to immediately understand the nuances of the problem, like how having friends who are also Kikainoids should of course mean not all Kikainoids are bad. He has to be prompted to think about that to actually see the error of his ways. Sometimes heroism, if followed to the letter instead of the spirit, can lead us to become zealots. Heroism isn't something that can be universally defined, as Robin Hood once said in Kamen Rider Ghost. If there's any moral worth taking away from this, I think it's that we should routinely evaluate how we think and feel about other people to determine whether or not we're still being fair to them. Most of us were Gaon at one point and likewise, Gaon has taken the first steps to becoming a better person. Seeing him take one for the team by enduring a beating, to the point of being demorphed and pretty badly hurt, is proof that he really does care about his friends deep down, much more than he cares about himself. I have to praise Juran as well, for being the only person on the team willing to call him out on this behavior, despite it turning out to be irrelevant to the problem of the missing Zenkaiju Gear. His wisdom is an incredible asset and one of several reasons why he's still my favorite Zenkaiger tied with Vroon. I mentioned in the first episode how an anniversary Sentai should remind people what heroism and justice really means and I think Juran was the first character to show that, when he saved that kid, for no other reason than he wanted to save him. There are so many amazing morals in this show that we should all take to heart. Personally, I would give that title to Episode 20. But even that had a nice moment with Zox and Flint and the debut of Super Twokaizer. What about this episode didn't work for you? Was it the ToQGer flashback reference that left a bad taste? Fortunately, like Gaon, I wasn't observant enough to notice that.

Got to say, it really is nice to see Gaon finally see his fellow Kikainoids as friends.
That comment about him thinking his teammates wanted to beat the crap out of him just because of his cold attitude towards them earlier, does show he still has his insecurities. Even with Gaon now on way better terms with the others, I hope Juran and Gaon still bicker on occasion, I do find it amusing and since they still do have clashing personalities. |

I didn't think much of it at first but then I realized there were five of them, each in classic Gorenger colors, and then after seeing blue tshirt glasses kid and pink bag pigtails kid it all clicked.
