Hey, y’all it’s me GrandComplete with a new thread this time I’m watching an oldie straight from the Showa Era Chojin Barom-One! And we were looking at the original manga first; which is interesting to me as Tokusatsu is no stranger to Manga but it’s usually the live-action show or movie gaining a manga adaptation but the opposite happens all that often. In which Barom-1 starts as a manga before getting turned into a live-action tokusatsu show and then years later into 13 episode anime.
This series supposedly serves as an inspiration for Kamen Rider W which is also its unfortunate downfall as apparently, the audience did not jive with the two protagonist kids fusing to become one superhero leading to the manga’s cancellation and lead its creator Takao Saitoto to consider it a failure. But I suppose it was still profitable just enough for Toei to gain the license and make a 35 Episode show out of it. Speaking of this show is being fansubbed by Kiyan Shahab and currently, as of this post, they have subbed 5 episodes which maybe come back to bite me as I’m at the mercy of waiting for fansubs to understand progress for the live-action show but I also want to show my support and I guess raise awareness of this even happening in the first place much like what I hoped I did with Legend Heroes. I do admit that there is another reason I’m doing this however as you may know I took quite a huge hiatus on my Legend Hero thread and I feel like something like a show that being worked on can help stave off potential burnout so I won’t repeat the same mistakes before. Now I haven’t done anything yet but I was wondering for the manga at least would you prefer I post by volume (of which there are 3) or by each chapter (there are 9 in total)? And lastly, have you ever heard of Chojin Barom-1? So join me on another new adventure: 3 manga volumes, 35 episodes, and 13 episodes of an anime. The show is being uploaded on both Mega and the Internet Archive of all places. In both Softsubs and Hardsubs.

Chojin Barom-1... I've heard of this show before and was interested in watching it, mainly because I was interested in seeing how the show would handling having children being main protagonists of the show instead of just side characters, but I couldn't find it so I just gave up. This is the first time I've heard of somebody trying to find sub it though so thanks for bringing that to my attention. I have no idea how much attention I'm going to pay to this thread but I wish luck in your watchathon.

One thing I heard about this series is that when the show was airing, a kid made the news because he was being bullied for having the same name as the show’s villain (which made the producers add a disclaimer saying that said villain was a fictional character)

Barom-1 is also partly the inspiration for Kamen Rider W dual protagonists

Volume 1: Chapter 1 "The Cross Of Friendship"
So right off the bat I really dig the Manga artwork. It's got a bit of edge to it with a very moody washed out color palette that I think compliments the tone they're trying to go for in this first chapter. And getting down to it I think it's a solid debut establishing our two protagonists Takeshi and Kentaro contrasting, in terms of reputation, skills, and ethics. But also showing that they're both willing to jump in front of danger to save the innocent. Learning about each of the two boys' families, in particular Kentaro's father being a police officer and recently deceased wife. I’ll admit the chapter drops you into the story very suddenly both in Takeshi and Kentaro's initial confrontation as well as the exposition of Kopu and Doruge and the eternal battle of good and evil. Not helped by the fact we don’t see either of them physically. And now the superhero aspect of the first monster is a skeleton dog which is as basic as it sounds. I do confess I am incredibly curious how the live action and anime handles the designs of the monsters. And how could we forget Barom-One himself? The original design reminds me of DC’s Amazo anybody got that vibe of course since this started out as a manga it looks more like a traditional superhero versus what Toku hero usually look like.

Volume 1: Chapter 2 "Mini Mini Bop"
Getting to see Takeshi and Kentaro school life, seeing the two reputation and classmates noticing the two disparate classmates hanging out. It seems like the Drugs can possess people which I’m assuming is how the villains of the week are being handled. The bop is definitely going to show up in the live-action that prime time toku toy to be released. I do think Pin is going to be a recurring cast member and overall I think it is a decent episodic learning ropes type story.

Volume 1 Chapter 3: Loss Of Great Power
Lots of stuff happened in this chapter Doruge upping the ante with numerous traffic accidents, getting to see Takeshi sister Noriko, Kentaro and Takeshi disagreements leading to them both temporarily losing their powers. Even getting to see the Doruge silhouette. I really like this chapter with both strong character focus as well as continuing to show off Doruge power and potentially weakness as seen by controlling low energy cars over the much high engery traffic
