How many anime references are they gonna put in the episode titles before the end, I wonder?!
Another astoundingly fun and goofy episode from Zenkaiger. I've started to take it for granted lately, but episodes like this, or the Retro World episode or the Trash World one, really remind me how much ridiculous and admirable effort they put into the set design just to sell the World's gimmick as hard as possible every week. |

I honestly would've been totally cool if the entire back half of this episode was nothing but Vroom schooling Stacey at his own quiz. Vroom's great, because everyone in this show is great, but after a really strong debut, he's maybe ended up trailing just the ~tiniest~ bit behind the rest of the cast for me, and some extra time to shine in the spotlight would be an easy way to help him keep up. So pretty much immediately, I was way into the idea of him applying his insatiable appetite for knowledge to liberate the Earth from the menace of evil compulsory education. I would've adored it if the plot of this one basically ended up centered on how Vroom is *so* insanely dedicated to learning that he'll just immediately shoot to the top of whatever system you put him in, even if the curriculum is completely nonsensical. It's a great idea for a plot, I think, but this episode has several great ideas for a plot, and it goes ahead and does them all, because that what puts the "Zenkai" in Zenkaiger. I'll seriously never get tired of these random one-off comedic episodes dedicated to exploring whatever weird, arbitrary premise they chose that week. You might think I'm going to take a second to bemoan that we didn't get a more character-driven plot with a stronger and more narrow focus or something, but that's not what I'm getting at at all. What I'm saying is that I really enjoyed what this episode did with Vroom in the middle, and then it's ALSO full of all this other stuff that I still enjoyed every bit as much. Zenkaiger simply does *not* know how to waste a concept. They pack just about everything you could hope for in here. Sure, Vroom defeating the bad guys with his nerdiness would've been great, but the whole team defeating The System with the raw power of anarchy? Those are both such great choices, I'd pick both too! This is essentially another one of those definitive episodes of Zenkaiger. Not necessarily in the sense that it's the absolute best the show has to offer (although it is good!), but in that... I just can't think of any other Sentai I've seen that does episodes in quite this style? It's seriously like a 20+ minute long comedy sketch that somehow manages to function as a legitimate Super Sentai episode at the same time, and this late in, I'm still not entirely sure how Zenkaiger manages to make that concept work so well. There's even a bit of a moral in there about valuing the regular, not evil kind of education! Plus, the fine details are great as always. Fun bits of continuity like Flint being stumped by a question about a monster from before she was on the show, and there are also like, jokes within jokes; everybody's different answers on those whiteboards was especially great. (They even differentiated everyone's handwriting perfectly!) I also liked the giant robot fight in this one. The bit where Ijirude sheepishly admits he can't pump out his fancy new CG robots seems like a bit of a meta jab at the budget issues that arise for the show itself trying to do that, but as sad as he seems, I'll be honest, I think the simple approach fits Zenkaiger's mood a lot better than flashy animated action does. Like, when you have a gag where a giant dinosaur robot is nearly defeated by having to do math, how much else do you seriously need?

The only part of this episode that fell flat was the final battle. For as much focus as Vroom was getting, to resolve the shield by having Magine magic it to a simple question was a tad lame.
Otherwise, it was a ton of fun. I held off on watching this episode immediately mainly because I felt it wasn't going to be interesting. As soon as I begin to take Zenkaiger for granted, it immediately picks back up and proves how much fun it is. I know some people might think it would've gotten repetitive, but I'mma be real. I kinda wanted to see all 10 Tojitendo questions Also, Chameleon Green briefly turning pink by touching Magine's staff was a cute moment.

How was the show so far? I haven't watch Super Sentai since Lupat (and half of Ryusoulger). I see that this season is an anniversary season so I wonder if this season is as good as Gokaiger or even better.

The Tojitendo Jeopardy Game was one of the most highly viewed, yet poorly received show when it debuted. Later Punks ransacked the studio, and the show was cancelled...
It's strangely hilarious how the Kikainoids wear clothes instead of something simple like giving them a tie or something, and despite being less bulky and robotic, they look like what you'd expect from some Toku parody, and it just works. That and they even gave Ricky and Cuttaner clothes too, which was rather adorable. I love the callbacks like; is there a difference between Trash and Recycle World, Jyuran references the ghost school from earlier in the show, or Flint not recognizing Tuna World who appeared before Twokaiser's debut. Even meta jokes like Ijirude mentioning he can't mass-produce the new Kudaitests, were brilliant. And of course, we see the return of the Zenkaiger Theater Troupe, which I absolutely adored. From the arrival of them being delinquents, to Academy World's intervention, and the appearance of Buckwild Sentai Zenkaiger (which is a perfect alternative name for this show). Even the Mecha Fight, as simple as it was, still managed to be amusing. Brief mention, I was wondering if Kaito had questions regarding Gege and his resemblance to Secchan. Nice to know they somewhat acknowledge it. Next Episode: Make way for the Pumpkin King! |
