I think it's safe to say that in terms of US childrens' shows that Power Rangers revolutionized an industry. Whether it was the amazing empowerment of teens, diversity of cast, longevity or what have you there's no denying the impact left on children's programming to this day. However that's the lasting impact of heroes.
What about the villains? Rita Repulsa was evil sure, menacing? Yes. Scary? Hell no. Lord Zedd, now there's a scary dude. Basically naked, covered in a metal ribcage, with a bitchin' staff, and a raspy voice that could chill you to the bone when your 6. Pretty sure if a giant red naked man with magic powers comes at you with an army of monsters you should be terrified. Zed completely changed the game with his approach to villainy in Power Rangers. I think most of us could agree that no Ranger villain since has really come up to his level. He was powerful, utterly in control of minions, ruthless, exacting, and vengeful. And really until Rita love-potioned him he was the perfect villain. But as we all know that was done in an effort to tone down Zedd after parental concerns that he was "too evil" for kids. Having the two of them be an evil power couple was pretty awesome too though. Watching the 2 of them menace the rangers together was just plain awesome but Zedd was still the real player in that game. Even after ebing toned down and being forced to live in a space-winebago, his impact was so significant that 15 years later we even got his son, Thrax, for the Power Rangers anniversary. In my opinion, for a US creation Zedd was formidable and awesome until he was toned down. And I mean, what other villain do you know that can rock this?

Yeah, these two were amazing, and easily a LOT more interesting than any of the Rangers. I actually like most of the early villains (Goldar & Finster for example), and you could just tell that their acting was miles ahead of the others.
I also liked Astromena who came a little later on, but nobody really came close to Rita & Zedd in my opinion.

Zedd freaked me out, but so did Scorpius and Trakeena. Jeez, she was creepy in her final form...
Though it might just be because I was really young the last time I actually watched Lost Galaxy, but eh. |

I definitely agree that Zedd lost his bad ass image once he got hitched with Rita. On a side note...I ended up meeting their VAs at an Anime convention last year. Felt great to see two voices of my childhood in person.

Lord Zedd is probably one of the greatest Tokusatsu villains ever created - and the fact that he's an American-made Tokusatsu villain just baffles the mind when you think that it was POWER RANGERS in its INFANCY that created the character.
Even in his final appearance in "Countdown to Destruction", he was still leading a massive army and being ruthless, almost like his old self. Even if we all know the Gold Ranger was just burning time so he didn't hog all the glory when he defeated the entire Alliance of Evil. |

Zedd was awesome.
He's easily my favorite Ranger villain, and one of the bests in series as well. |

I never really cared for MMPR or Zedd's character much, but goddamn I love his suit design. That's good, right?

Zedd was great. He is proof that when PR tries to do its own thing, it can work really well. Also he has definitely has the wickedest villian suit design I've ever seen. He looks like a dude stripped of his flesh and had his bones cast in metal. That's freakishly awesome.

Even though Zedd definitely lost some Badassery after marrying Rita, his most epic moment happened after the wedding. Lord Zedd in the Command Center.

Hahah you know, I honestly never thought of him being "naked" until reading this thread. Now I like him even more, which as someone else mentioned, may or may not be a good thing.
