I get the feeling that whoever writes these synopsises doesn’t actually read any official announcements, given how wrong they tend to be.

Don Robotaro. Don Robotaro. So this is basically a show made by ge... Wait. I feel like I've done this bit before. And come to think of it, that "Colorful Sundae" on the menu that Kaito didn't want Haruka seeing reminds me an awful lot of something too. And especially now that we've finally seen Kaito transform into Zenkaiser Black, it's like there's some show I'm thinking of that I can't quite place. You know, it had, like, insanely clever writing? Hilarious comedy? What was it again? Oh right! Donbrothers! I joke like I could ever forget Zenkaiger, but part of the fun of the way the show is treating Kaito is how well Inoue's usual apathy for nerdy details lends itself to the constant teasing. Which is to say, most of the time, it barely is teasing, but it feels that way because a lot of us loyal viewers are inherently concerned about what Kaito's deal is, and the people making the show probably know that. But Kaito is totally just some guy who runs a cafe and is also a superhero on the side, honest! What more do you need to know? It's like, even in this episode where he finally plays a slightly bigger role, he's no less of a question mark by the end, and I adore how playful they're being about that. I would honestly be okay with the subject literally never being addressed by the end of the show, with two identically named characters played by the same guy two years in a row just being this inexplicable bit of Sentai trivia for all eternity. I'm reasonably sure the show does have *some* plan it'll explain eventually, but still, there's always a chance. I mean, it's not like they care enough to show the Sentai Gears in Donbrothers consistently. Oh, and speaking of Inoue's apathy for what you'd think would be a basic fact of the story, I love that Don Momotaro just pulled that Gear out of nowhere for the climax. You literally write the plot around Tarou falling ill and having to come back strong, even directly involving for the first time a character who clearly knows a thing or two about his Gears, and then Tarou still just pulls a new one out like he's always had it. And heck, maybe he has, right? Who are we to say he just hasn't felt like using that until now? That is a classic Kamen Rider Kiva move from Inoue right there. It makes enough sense for a toy to exist in the world, and that's as much thought as you're going to see put into it. Just be glad Tarou is probably going to be using this more than a few times, okay? Besides, when the episodes have stories this fun, I'm not exactly in a rush to jump on the writer for not placing a spotlight more on the merch. It's fitting that this is the episode that makes the heaviest use of Kaito yet, because parts of this one absolutely felt like the most Zenkaiger an episode of this show has ever been in structure. You've got a slightly more comical villain with a pretty silly gimmick, and a wacky problem for our heroes to solve in a wacky manner. Although I suppose in Zenkaiger, the latter usually stems directly from the former. Just goes to show how busy this team is with Don Momotaro as a leader! Being crazy strong and full of energy is the one thing you can rely on him for, and sometimes you can't even hope for that much. Much like Zenkaiger, I feel like the biggest success of this one is just kinda the sketch comedy aspect of it. Don Momotaro's whole entrance in the initial fight scene? That whole escalation of how utterly pathetic it is at every turn? What can I call that scene besides absolutely brilliant? And that's on top of the usual assortment of traditional Donbrothers gags, including such recurring favorites as Oni Sister getting tossed around, which will never get old. I guess that's about the sum of it. Tasaki's direction here was great, there are some neat hints towards future events, but mostly, this episode is just plain funny, and I wouldn't dream of asking it to be anything more.

Wait, Tarou lied. I thought he couldn't do that.

I think I'm just going to start posting my favorite line or bit of humor from each episode. And this week it was:
When Haruka mocks Jin Momoi with his own line "visiting hours are over"

Normally I'm all up for Donbrothers doing whatever it feels like, tossing aside the merch to do stuff with its characters, but this one was a bit lacking even in the latter? There was barely a story to be had with Taro's illness. Subverting the idea that the kibidango would solve the day and instead it'd come from support from his companions sounds fine on paper, but that 'resolution' is done so abruptly that I didn't really feel it at all.
The return of those scenes of one of them challenging Taro in that ring of flames is still really great though. |

Oh, so that's how the kibi dango fits in here. Even though the method of preparing it doesn't necessarily seem that important, it's the effort that Saruhara and Kito put in to it that makes it special to Tarou. In other words, Tarou's companions are the kibi dango that keeps him going, figuratively speaking. Eating food prepared by someone who cares about you is also a connection to be grateful for!
The zero motivation Don Momotarou fight sequence was humorous. Even his parade crew weren't feeling the festival mood. Actually, the dancers didn't even look like the same girls from before, did anybody else think that? Kaito finally makes his debut fight as Zenkaizer Black, since it's an emergency, although he lacks the means to fight Tokumeiki. Maybe he's not considered a Player Character like the Donbrothers, so the best he can do his stall for time. No explanation for what his deal is, but now that Kito knows his identity, she'll probably confront him about it later. A little unsettling how easily Kijino reverted to his kind and gentle self after his brief moment of accomplice to murder last week. Certainly makes him an intriguing character to watch though! Looks like Sonoza's constantly harassing everybody with his emotional curiosity whenever he's not fighting, so it was nice to see Kijino try and make him laugh for real. Tokumeiki is simultaneously the youngest and oldest Hitotsuki host we've seen so far, like how Jin Masato was simultaneously 27 and 40 years old. Next time.... Kito gets a call from NASA?

I thought the reason why he couldn't do much was because the enemy didn't have a real body or host. Hence why Tarou had to beat him at his own game.

If I somehow manage to forget it by December, I want to point out now that the Squid Game fight scene with the constant freezing mid-fight is going to be hard to beat as the funniest moment of the year. The fact that one of the mooks straight up halts mid-jump was just the icing on top of a delightful visual gag cake.

So, as someone who only watched one episode of Zenkaiger, can someone fill me in on what Zenkaizer Black's deal is? He was on that show first, right? |

Nope. He's played by the same actor as Kaito/Zenkaiser from that show, and that's about it since this recolour guy is new to Donbrothers. People have been wracking their brains wondering what, if any, connection he has to the previous show. I genuinely hope Donbrothers' answer to that will be 'who cares lol'.
