This episode shows Sabimaru and Renge using their alchemy power on-screen for the first time. What's kinda surprised me is that Minato tasked Sabimaru with the clean up job aka Neuralyzing the Muggles.
The Dragonfly Malgam has a funny huge Pompadour similar to Yanma Gast's. I think the mysterious man is the kid's teacher at school or tutor at cram school. What's Atropos' motivation to appear before Rinne? In the preview for the next episode, she's shown as if she's revealing some secrets about Fuga. Does she do it merely to break Rinne's spirit, or something else? What does she gain from doing so? Spanner trying to connect the dots is also an interesting scene. It looks like the alchemy organization has long known about the Sisters and their goals, and vice versa. It seems to be more and more likely that they were once allies. Perhaps the Sisters' organization consists of rogue alchemists, similar to the schism between Jedi and Sith. This episode ends with Houtarou free-falling from the sky. I bet he's gonna be saved by Hawkstar. It's episode 7 already, and this series has still got many base forms to show. Regarding Houtarou's dream, I have a hypothesis. Houtarou's dad probably had similar grand dream to Houtarou's, that is, the coexistence of Chemies with humans, and to share the power of alchemy to the world. The main villain(s) probably didn't like that idea because they only wanted to keep the power of alchemy to themselves to enable them to rule the world behind the curtain. I think that's why Fuga cryptically stated that the Gotchardriver can bring hope if used by the right person, and bring darkness if falls into the wrong hands. It kinda makes no sense if Houtarou has already got a grand dream while he's only known about Chemies (and alchemy) for just one week. |

More character building this episode.
Seems to be consistent that Hotaro's vice is a bit pride, where like Supana before, here he gets riled up when Riku takes him for granted. I mean obviously Hotaro's still caring and protective to Riku, but that still exists, like even Supana offering to explain in condescending way, though it'd offend Hotaro, maybe setting aside his pride is still best course of action. Though despite failing and having to buy drink, seems that Riku opens up more to Hotaro afterwards to talk about why he's so closed off regarding his promise. Twice Hotaro interacts with the aloof smart kid, Rinne and then Riku. I have a feeling that Riku's dad may be the MOTW (Malgam Of The Week). (Attempt of) can-kicking of an orange drink feels Geats before. Renge's opportunistic side also shows up here, though like above being comedic, with her insisting to take anything for herself like credit for the Chemy capture or payment. Using coupon is nothing wrong (anyone'd do it ofc) but it fits her trying to spend as less as possible. She'd view Rinne as a bit of a thorn of her side to keep an eye on her for her money-oriented approach, while Rinne's dutiful nature is also emphasized here of her being unfamiliar to even mundane stuff like food ordering, as she said of forgoing making friends before Atropos approaches her. Ironic though, I thought being smart student means she'd memorize said order easily. Hotaro's naivety is also highlighted here to simplify Riku and Sabo's situation with him putting Chemies on pedestal, while Rinne upholds the law about Chemies disrupting natural order. Speaking of Chemies, their cards are durable enough to shield Hotaro and still be functional. Sabi is so much of a wreck that he has a meltdown when his tablet's battery runs out. Supana has earned Sabi's animosity for forcing his belief to anyone, while it's revealed that Sabi collects Chemies for grade. Even Minato is supportive to Hotaro's belief to some extent.

Well, Gotchard has moved to the traditional two-episode format for Riders, which means this episode is more about throwing hooks into the next one. We learn that an effective team is not necessarily a tight-knit one; that Rinne is so busy with alchemy that she even perceives cakes through the prism of their possible uses; We see Renge's greed and how strong (and also dangerous) Sabimaru's shyness is. Isaac also talks about hating Spanner. By the way, I don’t trust Isaac, because Hasegawa worked on Saber. I also really enjoyed the crab fishing at the beginning. Again, Chemies are unique in that catching them doesn't have to involve beating up the monster.
I also want to note how dangerous GreaTombo Malgam is shown. I immediately remember Osa from Kuuga. As for NeedleHawk, I clearly see this form as being inspired by Kamen Rider Bravo. Overall, I liked the episode, so I'm looking forward to the next one. P.S. Also I didn't understand something. Earlier in the show, Spanner told Minato that they were equal in status. But in this episode he called Minato senpai. Is it because Minato is older or a plot error? Last edited by Mesnick; 10-20-2023 at 01:14 PM.. |

Yea, it turned out he's just the kid's dad. I was wrong. Haha.

I don't think it's due to plot error. I think it's caused by Spanner's smug elitism, while it's clear that his rank (green gem) is lower than Minato's (red gem) is. |
