While the Beverly Hills Cop reference in LuPat was better, the Terminator 2 reference here is still much appreciated.
However, I am now genuinely curious as to how many Japanese kids/parents would catch that. While I know the movie was released over there, I don't know if it became as much of a cultural phenomenon there like it did over here Also, having finished Abaranger a month or so back, I actually knew about how to remove a magnet's strength. Sentai spread over 20 years teaching me about magnetics, thanks! Anyway, fun episode. Magnet World screwing himself over in the end was funny. Strong Stacey stuff here, and I'm glad Yatsude caught on quickly. Both that Kaito and Stacey clearly knew each other and that something had happened between them. Can't get past grandma! I absolutely love Gege. Just like last episode, he's really putting it out there that he's the real one in charge. Playing the other generals easy, knowing about Stacey's treachery, and raising Bokkuwas's emotional state. Like, dayum. I was gonna ask how Bokkuwas can't see through it, but much like how any dog owner can be soothed by having their pup run up and cuddle them, yeah, Gege basically has Bokkuwas eating out his hands. Makes perfect sense

I laughed when they went through the entirety of TwoKaiOh's transformation scene, even having Ricky dramatically declare "It's my turn now!!!" only to just have Magnet World immediately send them flying. It's only fair considering how badly TwoKaiOh Ricky showed up all the other mechs back in its debut! Plus, it was nice to have an excuse to see the giant Kikanoids fighting again and even saving the day.
I keep being impressed by all the elaborate prop work that goes into each of these weird gimmicks every week. Having so much stuff flying around and then making all that junk look like it was stuck to Zyuran and Gaon as they came running into the climax, the show continues its streak of being immensively charming and impressive in the little touches. |

This show, man. It's gonna be one of those ones where I run out of different ways to say "I liked it" each week by the halfway mark, I just know it! This episode felt even more stellar than usual, whatever that means when I just said words to that exact effect last week. What's more unique to this one is how I feel its structure is particularly commendable, with the focus beautifully split between all the principle characters. Just when you think the plot is only going to be about one main thing, it switches the story up, and as is Zenkaiger's way, it makes all that rapid-fire insanity feel natural. The biggest thing is still Stacey, of course. Or at least it feels that way when I love Stacey so much. All the material with him in this one is fantastic. A lot of what drew me into his character right away was how much you could tell, not only from his backstory, but simply from the actor's embittered performance, that he's very much someone who is a bad guy as a product of a bad environment more than anything, so this sort of wrinkle in the story is exactly what I want to see from him. Stacey chasing after the life he wishes he had. and all the drama that's sure to come from him realizing his resentful personality is completely at odds with ever having that warmth in the long-term. And like, the one showing him that affection is literally his arch-enemy's grandmother. Could that be any more perfect? Well, yeah, when the grandmother we're talking about is Yatsude, it can. Like I said last time, she can make small roles in an episode count for a lot, and that closing scene where she assumes Kaito and "Satoshi" are two people fighting when they should be getting along as friends is a real highlight. Because it's like, she's not exactly wrong! It's this sort of dramatic irony that's way up my alley, where Yatsude's inaccurate reading of the situation points towards a potential larger truth. Maybe Stacey's not such a bad kid deep down, if you give him a chance, and you can see that Kaito is leaning more in that direction in the end. As cool as all this stuff with Stacey and Kaito is, by the time Zenkaiser and Twokaiser head out to stop the monster, I was a little worried for a bit the episode might be keeping the Kikainoids a little too out of focus. (Although Secchan being glued to Zenkaiser might've made up for it a tiny bit.) But sure enough, the show goes a step beyond, and explicitly allows Zyuran and Gaon their big underdog comeback, being the ones to put a stop to the monster's abilities by using his own powers against him. And then it gives all four of them a literal BIG comeback when Zox's robot is tossed straight out of the fight and Kaito can't even combine them to pilot a robot himself. It's a well-deserved turnaround for a group of characters who went through WAY too much comedic suffering to not get a cool hero moment or two by the end. I was deeply glad to see they weren't forgotten. Plus! While I've been trying to avoid jumping the gun on mentioning this, this episode is a big contributor to a mounting pile of evidence that Zenkaiger's villains are low-key pretty freakin' good? It's strange to think about, because in terms of characterization and style, they're not different from Koumura's usual fare, but they have a way of managing not to fade into the background so far that's maybe worth noting. You regularly get a good sense of the individual scheming they've each got going on, and the idea that even the pet bird can feel significant is a testament to that.

It's funny how the episode I thought would be my favorite, was also the one I couldn't find anywhere until the latest episode. So I watched both, and ultimately, loved both.

So for last week's with Retro World, I loved the retro looks for the Zenkaigers and all of the shenanigans involving TwoKaiser's team getting the worst of it, which I feel links to the concept of TwoKaiser's tech being a copy of the Zenkaiger's tech, which appears to be more advanced than they thought. Retro World is probably my favorite Villain-of-the-Week so far, though Magnet World comes close in design, and I loved how it was the Kikainoids time to shine this episode, with some really nice scenes with Yacchan and Ryo exploring the Retro World. Really liked this one, especially when Giant Retro World used the Specium Ray from Ultraman, absolutely killed me. And now we have that part from Stardust Crusaders in Toku form, which I could not get out of my head, and Jyuran saying "Oh my god." only made it better, even having the same plan to win with Gaon. We even got to see the Kikainoids fight giant-sized, which I really enjoyed, along with that fun scene where TwoKaiOh Rickey got yeeted, and the "Who finished him off?" bit. Seeing Stacey this episode, makes me really interested in seeing how he'll go this season (I hope Battle Caesar Robo returns), and how things with the Tojitendo fare, since they're all some really fun and interesting villains in how they're trying to outdo each other. Next Week: Love how Jyuran is reduced to an arrow on screen. |

I think the Tojitendo as individuals were in real danger of sinking into the background, but then the moment Stacey was introduced it just completed the character dynamics by his broken home relationship with Barashitara, his scheming and collaborating with Ijirude; and then that allowed the show to springboard off of that to fuel a subtle rivalry between the two. It's one of those things where it always shocks me to hear that Stacey was a late addition to the show because he really brings character dynamics together on every level!

Speaking of 'hey, Miss Komura's villain writing was improved'- I don't know how many were also following her work last year on Healin' Good Precure, but the villain group there also really worked for me in how it used rivalries and internal competition. It's good to see that improvement continuing for her in Zenkai!
