This show is great so far. I like how there’s real conflict between the Boonboomgers over this, and I feel like it isn’t going to be solved too easily. Maybe ignored for a while, but it will probably come up again.
Also the villains are great. Mad Rex is an incredibly strong first general, and I’m pretty glad he doesn’t have the generic first general personality. He’s hot headed and short tempered in a way that manifests in a more “fast” demeanour than with similar generals, he’s funny while being an entirely serious and credible threat, and his fights have been top notch. He’s definitely dead next episode, but if the upcoming villains are this level of quality, I’m very excited to see them. And obviously this episode is pushing things in the direction of Decotrade, Itasha, and Yaiyarucar not actually being antagonists. Sentai villains never show compassion for each other unless it’s plot important. |

1) Boonboomger's heroism was unclear 2) Taiya is too weird to relate to So I kind of feel reassured that this episode addresses both of those points. Shirabe explains it, that Taiya is apparently waging their fight against the Hashiliens as a test drive for this BBG and his comrades are merely willing pawns to that end. It's a very Ishinomori twist, that Boonboomger wasn't created for heroism at all. Jou literally joined them to become a more effective hero, so of course he's super ticked off at Taiya for this revelation, while Chassirou can't offer any insight beyond, "we just have to trust Taiya". And this episode is written by Tomioka, so maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt that he's actually going somewhere with this. Quote:

Well, they are literally antagonists, that's their designated role, but if you mean they might redeem later, then yeah, I can see that. They're too complacent to take seriously as a big evil threat. Itasha creates Autos, Yarucar enlarges Autos and Decotrade.... What does he even do? I'm convinced that the Hashiliens are broke as well, since the closest thing they currently have to call a base is an alleyway with a couch in the middle. Even the Gaiark Ministers were more threatening.

I think I'm starting to understand this show a little better.... Maybe. My early complaints were:
1) Boonboomger's heroism was unclear 2) Taiya is too weird to relate to So I kind of feel reassured that this episode addresses both of those points. Shirabe explains it, that Taiya is apparently waging their fight against the Hashiliens as a test drive for this BBG and his comrades are merely willing pawns to that end. And this episode is written by Tomioka, so maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt that he's actually going somewhere with this. This is also probably why the ISA stuff is here, Boonboomger is going to be stuck under the thumb of government bureaucracy and have to escape from it, or the ISA lady is going to break from it. Also I always kinda felt like Red was intended to be a little off, since none of the episodes so far have focused on him, and Pink has always been treated as our point of view character. Quote:

Mad Rex, however, is loyally following orders from his boss, and is relying on the people he considers to be less than worthless to actually do things for him. Even if they ended up trapped in the cages, Itasha and Decotrade still trapped most of the team so that Mad Rex could fight Red on his own, and Yarucar got the Gyaughsoline that he needed to grow giant. Hell, Mad Rex blindly follows the orders of his dog. Speaking of, the trio are also themed around cats, and Mad Rex has a dog, and I think there?s definitely something there. I think these guys are genuinely really important to the themes of the show. I?m willing to bet, considering we have a Pok?mon writer as showrunner, that their ending is going to be less? depressing than the fates of the Gaiark Ministers. We?ll have to see if they like, fully go good or if it?s a bit where they quit but are still bad guys. |

The theme of the show is meant to be like, taking independence of your life, ?taking the wheel?, like how in the first episode Pink decided to become a Boonboomger so she wasn?t being forced to do things or have to rely on other people. This theme ties in here because Red is going for his own dream without considering the other people on the team, or at least that?s how it seems. I?m going to bet that Red?s intergalactic racing dreams are also because he wanted to escape from his own dependence on something.
That's why I like the drama that ISA bring to the plot, as it shows how Jou is conflicted about his loyalty to Shirabe, his own morality and now towards Taiya as well. Jou is transparent, so I can appreciate why he values autonomy as means to be a hero while struggling against restrictions to heroism imposed by his superiors. I speculated from the bio that Taiya was going to be like Akashi and Sousuke. Right now though, he's more like Lucky and Ukiyo Ace. While those characters did become more complex as the story progressed, the early part was mostly them saying weird stuff and solving problems with little effort. I imagine that Taiya is most likely a better person than the show is currently making him out to be, since Chassirou and Genba both vouch for him, but the journey to that part is tedious for me so far. I'd also argue that Mira stopped being a viewer perspective in Episode 3, since the plot twist relied on viewers taking Taiya's instinct at face value and not knowing what Mira was thinking. So yeah, the show has reached a point where I can kind of see where it's going and now I'm just waiting to see how that changes the status quo. Quote:

It's humorous to me how Go-Onger has a reputation for being lighthearted despite so many sympathetic characters getting killed, albeit temporarily. The Go-Ongers and Gaiark Ministers are doing okay in Shinkenger VS and 10 Years Grand Prix anyway. While I'm only a casual when it comes to anime, I heard that Takegami also wrote for Pokemon, so if he can go dark sometimes then I think Tomioka should be capable of this as well. For the current Super Hero Time, I find the Dark Sisters a lot more intriguing and different than the Hashiliens.

To me, the best part of this show is the Sanbaka's interactions. I could watch their mundane banter all day, haha.
I have a hypothesis that the Hashiliens (the Sanbaka and Mad Rex) are a broke space racing team that is manipulated by the big bad (Waruido Spindo) who is a galactic mafia kingpin who operates an illegal gambling/racing circuit. |
