Ok, I've been on this site for quite some time now and I've noticed a theme going on with both tokusatsu and other forms of media.
Has anyone ever taken the time to look around and notice a lot of female characters are disliked or outright hated? Granted a few of them are bratty/stupid/foolish as are some male characters. This isn't meant to white knight but I did want to bring this up as I notice the issue of "Female character doing something people dislike" coming up from time to time. My guess is that since a good number of writers are male they don't really understand a female mindset so they go with broad strokes with charactzation, which sees some success or criticism depending on how the character(s) are written. What are your thoughts on this and how can it be fixed according to you? |

The simple fact is that men and women are more or less the same (barring some obvious biological and chemical differences).
Writers, readers and viewers have a tendency to get things confused and try to view female characters as something other than just another human being you know? I'm wondering if the problem is that certain elements within the fandom are so used to this kind of mindset that they look for reasons to pick on the girls. Fact is they may be doing it for the totally altruistic reasons of wondering if the writers are treating their female characters with respect, but as they say, if you look for a fire you'll find one. Now I don't doubt certain writers are still backwards with their sexism. Sadly, it still happens. But its just as bad in my opinion to try and fix it by "understanding the female mindset" when there isn't actually anything more to understand about them than men. Bit of a common fallacy it seems. The fix is for people to treat every character they write/read/watch as just another human being with a unique background which makes them uniquely them. There are feminine men, masculine women, masculine men, feminine women and for that matter none or all of the above. There is no right or wrong way, but I believe people need to take a step back sometimes and view a character by their motivations, not their gender or sex. |

I just think in a world where we have Frozen, things like Eri bakes a cake need to stop. I don't hate female characters BECAUSE they are female, gender, race etc means very little to me. But that doesn't stop the unfortunate reality that toku characters, who all happen to be female, are almost exclusively awful.

So I guess you're just totally ignoring the metric shitload of bad male characters, as well?
If a character is disliked or hated, it's because they're a bad character. There's nothing TO be fixed. |

Oh yeah and that isn't saying that male characters aren't bad as well but both Super Sentai and Kamen Rider are sausagefests, so out of sheer numbers there is bound to be a greater amount of beloved male characters than there are female ones.
