I'm glad things are starting to come together. I'm still curious about Ikki vanishing from photos, but it seems they'll get to that soon enough.
I'm a little curious about Vice's contract, though. He'll protect Ikki and his family, in exchange Ikki will forget about that day and he won't talk about it? Kind of a weak contract for a demon. Like, literally nothing selfish about it. At the very least, Momotaros did as he pleased before becoming an actual good guy. Aggressive Lovekov is cute.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm rather apprehensive about what hitting the back half of a Rider show seems to mean at this point. Like, we've got another big scary evil Kamen Rider in the vein of Gold Drive, and now we're probably hitting that point where we'll never see the heroes actually fighting monsters and saving people again as they instead fight the same evil Kamen Riders and other boss characters over and over again, with old forms completely falling to the wayside along with the variety that used to accompany them, and... okay, you know, let me stop myself right here. It's not really fair to Revice for me to be unloading all my frustrations with recent Kamen Rider shows on it before I've even seen where it's actually going for itself first.
I do wanna complain about one other thing with Vail first though -- the stock music playing throughout his debut. I've seen so many movie trailers in my life than I can recognize the swells where shot transitions are supposed to be happening, and when he does his finishing move, it's clearly the usual "build up to title card followed by release date" spot, and like, it was messing with my brain a little! Definitely not something that will be an issue for the majority of the audience, and it's not exactly unfitting music, but I couldn't help but be distracted. And speaking of getting distracted, I sure am whining about this episode a lot, huh? It probably sounds like I have major beef with it at this point, but really, it's very specifically those two things that worry/bother me, respectively. This is a very well-placed turning point for the series, and it's definitely compelling seeing where all the mysteries are going. It does a lot right in how it adds new questions in the process of resolving the old ones, and I mean, having the main heroes literally be the children of the main bad guy is quite possibly the most direct take I've seen on the classic Kamen Rider trope of the heroes coming from the same source as the villains. (Although this *is* also why I think of Ultraman Geed as one of the best Kamen Rider shows in recent memory.) Plenty of good lore in here, a fun enough fight scene with the three siblings, and Olteca is still horrible. Not much more I could ask for from an episode of Revice, I suppose. (It does seem a little brazen to immediately announce a TTFC spinoff for Vail though.)

Will Sakura save Aguilera next episode!? I feel bad for her.
And wonder what happens to the family after they learned the truth? The siblings will probably be divided by this revelation. - Revice: Neutral - Live: FENIX - Jeanne: Weekend Hope Hiromi comes back anew. |

Finally caught up with Revice yesterday, and what an episode to get caught up with! Genta's backstory with Veil is classic Showa-era Kamen Rider goodness. I was getting major Build-vibes with the whole military aspect and memory erasure. I guess we now also know why the bathhouse was in ruins in the opening, although this doesn't explain the Ikki in the suit? Maybe Revice will borrow even more from Build and Veil goes full Evolto?
On a side note about the previous episodes, and I apologize if this has already been discussed here, but Demons, despite seemingly being an homage to Showa, has felt more like an homage to Kaixa recently. The driver is killing the user, the belt getting passed around, Olteca even does the collar thing! |

Shigeyuki Totsugi really isn't kidding about Genta holding untold secrets. It started since Genta is revealed to literally have no heart but it's even more than's expected (likely except those who remembers about multiple enemy dads in KR, especially on how Soichi is Evolt). Overall this is a really suspenseful episode full of plot twists that further takes the series into new direction after ep. 14 and ep. 21 before, and this'd still be the buildup of the big mystery that surrounds Revice as there are still unanswered questions too, as I'd write next. And it's overall good that Revice doesn't only have a full family as the main casts, but all of them gets big focus on the series (what'd be your mystery, Yukimi?).
The demon in the Demons Driver, which is revealed to be named Vail (after the debate between Bael, Veil, and Vail), took part in this secret reveal as well, as he's the demon of Genta. Other than Genta, turns out that Vail's role too is not just as simple as a doomsday villain type (like Arch Orphnoch or such) either as he leaves the Driver to go on his own, which is also good. Demons Driver is really the most significant part of the show, that takes a well-executed time to slowly establish its significance, starting from Hiromi being able to henshin unlike with Revice Driver, then Hiromi's predicament of suffering more physical problems as he keeps fighting, then Hiromi being revealed to have 80 year old's organ, then the Demons Driver revealing to be the one devouring his life force, then it being more sentient to give Olteca more power to use, and more by it deciding how much power he uses and leaving the Demons Driver. So... Hiromi's character so far was only a fodder (longer than what was planned) and stepping stone to establish Vail, and by that the secret behind Igarashi family. The question that should be explored later was how Genta and Vail can be separated like that with Vail ending up sealed in the Demons Driver. As when Vail takes over Genta while he henshins to Kamen Rider Vail, Genta's heart forms back, thus so far it's likely that Vail is Genta's heart, and that the separation may be about Genta cutting his heart off. Though for Vail's performance in his Kamen Rider mode, with Vail being able to destroy a Giftarian simply just by crushing its head, actually to me it'd feel as if his finisher move to the other Giftarian is a weaker feat, despite an effort to have the finisher break all of a building's window, as finishers would have the Rider use more effort to take down an enemy, while Vail took down a Giftarian with an ordinary move before. I'd also hoping that his henshin isn't loud like the other Riders but it was the same. Otherwise his design fits with the soldier mask to represent its militaristic motif as well as the rhinoceros beetle's legs coiling his body to represent it being a guinea pig-themed Rider that can have tubes injected on them. The glitch in his teleportations also gives different flavor of that kind of power. When Vail attacked the Igarashis, the scenario is the reversed one when Kagerou attacked Ikki on where one of the Igarashis got possessed and went on a rampage, with Genta trying and failing to stop Kagerou. Now it's Genta being possessed and went on a rampage, and Ikki trying and failing to stop Vail. While Genta is a lame father, he's never established as someone who doesn't care about his family like said Kagerou attack. Obviously he'd try to stop his children from being hurt, but the fact that he succeeded here to regain the control of his body back and thus de-henshin back adds an actual badass points for him here. About the past that Buu-san hides (the guy's so secretive... why's he like that? I hope later the reason, apparently in the previews of next episode, would be executed as well as this one, otherwise it'd just be a lame excuse for miscommunications), but what Ikki and George tells, so that reaffirms more that Masumi is morally dubious... it runs in the family too I guess, there's more than just his ViStamp plan to separate demons and his racism towards any demons, he's an unethical scientist that even disturbed Tasuke, shown in him injecting young Genta with the Giff's cells to restart his heart and using him as a guinea pig later. This is also apparently the event that manifested Vail inside Genta (like Vice, Kagerou, and Lovekov's debut to the siblings), and by this he was Kamen Rider Vail in the past.... or can still function when his heart got removed. I guess what Buu-san knows was about how Kamen Rider Vail was in the past that he didn't tell here, and the question here would be if Genta was the one in control as Kamen Rider vail and fought crimes too (likely against the Giff experiment that had discovered 50 years ago) or if Vail was the one in control to achieve his evil schemes, or both, or if Genta was actually evil before and repented, etc. The Igarashi family flashback which got repressed in Ikki's memory until now, also shows about how Vail is a yandere to Genta, he only saw Genta as his partner, but he saw Genta living a mundane life by starting a family as betrayal and thus he'd want to destroy anything Genta holds dear (yeah that's yandere alright). As Vice manifested too in that time, apparently Vice wants to protect Ikki's family albeit with the contract that Ikki should forget this memory. This is my gripe that it's quite inconsistent to Vice's debut at the series where he wanted to eat Yukimi or such and only fought for his selfish desires, it's a flashback where Ikki was a child but apparently it uses recent Vice's characterization to genuinely care about Ikki and his family. And this is also revealed as the reason why the Igarashis can fight as a Kamen Rider (as well as the oddities with them being affected by Giff)... so the requirement to become a Rider here is having Giff cells, thus they're technically descendants of Giff with Genta being injected by that. By this though, it's a different system from something like for example, Banjou in Build, as him having the DNA of Evolt made him superhuman via his abnormal Hazard Level, not only him being a boxer. While Sakura is also a martial artist, but the Giff cells apparently doesn't make her superhuman as when she faced Aguilera both in their human form it was about her accepting her limitations as human. As Vail left, now Olteca spend the episode trying to blame George for what he did to the Driver, where George was only confused on what's he talking about. I felt that Vail's reveal at last episode does confirm that it wasn't George who manipulated Olteca, but Vail himself, so obviously George would be confused, not lying here. Don't know if Olteca seeing Kamen Rider Vail finally convinced Olteca it wasn't George here other than him running off. Other than that, the episode still further showed his despicable traits by having jaded view of promises being made to be broken and gleefully doing it. With Olteca now losing both his contract and Demons Driver, as well as likely Vail and Giff (or Akaishi, albeit he warned Olteca to keep focus) taking over I wonder if Olteca's end is actually near now and he's more like Sid from Gaim or such, being made as utterly despicable, but far from the top dog and as it's established Sid was killed gruesomely. As for Aguilera, it seems that she's taking a revived Jin's path, that other than Julio, while continuing her schemes she'd now take care of her underlings, trying to prevent the Deadman cult members to be turned into Giftarians by Olteca. Still worse than Jin though as she still abuses them (like Julio) if she can but now has limits on what bad being done on them. So far, this change also seems sudden as previously she had no qualms of sacrificing people she "likes" for Giff such as Sakura, and she still only cares about Giff after Olteca's betrayal, does she actually take lessons herself with herself going to used as a sacrifice for Giff and applying that to the Deadman cult members here (but is in denial)? Because Jin's change was actually confirmed and established with him directly confessing to Aruto that he thought that by hacking Humagears, he was befriending them, but he realized that was wrong. Other than that, should Aguilera easily manhandle Olteca now under her submission again as now he lost both his contract and Demons Driver (he did KO George but still...)? Aguilera's the only remaining Giftex for now. Quote:
There was a lot to unpack here. So thirty years ago the Vistamps were developed to release inner demons for military projects. Coincidentally, thirty years ago was when a certain demon-esque Rider came out on theatres, so now I have this funny image of Vail and Shin duking it out. Jokes aside, I can totally see why Chigusa went rogue now. And considering that they're still researching Giff, I take it that they still haven't given up on the whole 'military demon' thing.

Also, he tried to eat Ikkis mom. I feel like that goes against the deal. Ikki should really get a lawyer to look over this contract.

Might want phone up someone from A.R. World of Ryuki... Speaking of which, Revice and Ryuki are both the 3rd shows in their respective eras. Maybe they should revisit the Kamen Rider Trial concept if/when they do the Reiwa equivalent of Decade, with all this talk of contracts. Or at least include some sort of a gag with this concept in a movie

I actually read somewhere on a Tumble post (yes, that site, please forgive the transgression) that Vice's contradictory actions makes sense if seen as the actions of an impulsive child, and I can kind of see that. He has that feel of the annoying younger brother who gets on your nerves, but push comes to shove, and it's shown that he does care in some way.
Remember that the Demons tend to represent a part of the humans themselves, whether it be Lovekov embodying Sakura's weakness or Kagerou embodying Daiji's resentment. Going by that logic, Vice isn't just necessarily Ikki's resentment towards his family, but rather his sense of childhood. Okay, I'm probably rambling at this time, but I could kind of see this line of logic since Ikki does appear to act like a parental figure to his siblings, which I think stands out since Genta is not exactly the most, well, "dutiful" parent as of now. Yukimi is better but considering that she doesn't seem to notice the problems Daiji and Sakura have while Ikki immediately notices... Eeeeeh. This could explain why Vice moves to attack Ikki's mom when Vice first manifested: Vice was acting on Ikki's suppressed emotions at the time, and while grateful to his mom, Ikki may have wanted her to become more involved with his siblings, and felt some resentment that she didn't.

My take on Vice is that he is definitely a firm ally now, even if he is still very impulsive. On the other hand, earlier on in the show before he had his character development, he would act quite malicious towards anyone who wasn't Ikki so I'm willing to bet his initial contract with Ikki as a kid had some nasty strings attached. At this point the real question is what exactly he was up to back then and why he hasn't explained in more detail.

Anyone got any Devil May Cry vibes from the backstory of the Igarashi family and how the children have inner devils.
