It was humorous how Kito felt uncomfortable about Machineki drawing her without her permission, but became jealous when she found out he was actually drawing Kaito instead.
The red balloon stuck in a tree is a cool reference to Inoue's Kamen Rider Faiz, where a red balloon stuck in a tree was a plot device that allowed Yuka and Keitarou to figure out each other's identities. Kijino's and Inuzuka's partners sound so similar, almost like they're the same person or something! Maybe that's why Inoue chose this episode to use the balloon reference. Machineki abducts Miho (who might be Natsumi), but she outwits him and escapes. There's something going on with her for sure. Tarou and Sonoi get to work together to perform some heroism, as they save people from a burning building while conveniently only being morphed when the other isn't around. It's interesting to see a member of the Noto do something good, since it further complicates their role as an antivillain group. Sonoi seems to relate to Tarou in a way that normal people can't. However, the real surprise of this episode for me wasn't even anything to do with the identical person thing. It's the part at the end, where Kijibrother deliberately allows Machineki to get murdered by Sonoi, out of spite for abducting his wife! Yeah, kind and gentle Kijino shows no mercy to him and even before the credits, he admits in his internal monologue that he has no remorse for his action! Damn, I thought Inuzuka was going to be the antihero of the show, but Kijino has that base firmly covered! Tarou was really ticked off and he knows where Kijino lives, so I'm excited to see where this is going from here. To paraphrase Kijino's work boss, "the pheasant kept its talons hidden"!

I really appreciate all the layers the characters in Donbrothers have. I guess maybe that's a particular talent of Inoue as a writer. It's hard to imagine many other shows where you can have a character go from being upset that a creepy stranger is staring at them, to being disappointed that the creepy stranger isn't staring at them, and have that change in attitude feel this smooth in barely over a minute. Because the whole reason that gag is so funny is that everything in there is 100% Haruka. Those reactions seem like complete contradictions at a glance, but every last bit of it is so firmly rooted in her well-established presumptuous self-confidence. She doesn't like someone basking in her obvious brilliance without her permission, and she likes someone not basking in it at all even less. The only unexpected twist in that entire sequence is who the model for that sketch turns out to be. The crooked yet lovable nature of this show's principle characters is something I continue to love about Donbrothers. Another one of those things, on a more minor note, is that we continue to have scenes of the heroes performing more minor acts of do-gooding, with Shinichi getting a scene in there just so he can get a balloon for some kid. I feel like I can't adequately describe why I like a moment like that so much, but I don't know, it's just neat seeing him use his amazing superpowers for something so mundane, that's also still pretty heroic? Actually, I guess me calling that "heroic" at all probably explains exactly why I dig that so much. It's all about helping people in my book, and that can be about a lot more than just hitting a bad guy. So yeah, the idea of Shinichi going around the neighborhood every day stopping traffic accidents and fetching lost balls or whatever, that gels with me a lot. Which makes this the episode for me, I guess, because we also have a whole sequence dedicated to Tarou and Sonoi, of all people, taking a moment out to play firefighter and rescue some people from a burning building. And "saving people from burning buildings" is like, the definitive hero situation for me, for a few reasons, so I was already excited about this just when I saw it in the preview last week. It's an awesome bit, and a great use of a classic Inoue staple, where two characters whose alter egos are sworn enemies meet unaware of each other's identity, and ironically get along quite well. I love this sort of dynamic a lot, not so much because of the tension it creates (although that can be great too), but because of the questions it begs. You see these two have so much in their personalities that overlaps, and how much of a great duo they make, and it gets you thinking about the whole nature of conflict in general. Like, man, wouldn't it be kinda cool if these two could just get along that way? Won't it be pretty tragic if their opposing views eventually cloud out everything they ever had in common? Don't you kinda hope that they could find a way to reconcile those differences that won't come down to violently hitting each other to "prove" their particular sense of righteousness? Of course, there are plenty of other ways you can read into those scenes, too. Perhaps the show is working towards the idea of tempting Tarou to the dark side, even, but at any rate, people finding out they relate to others in unexpected ways is another running theme in this series that I'm already very invested in. Oh, and speaking of realizing you're more like someone else than you think, AND being tempted to the dark side, we've got the material with Tsuyoshi and Tsubasa in this episode. Which is, uh, only the actual main plot! That I'm just now starting to talk about! (There is *so* much to dig into with Donbrothers!) It probably goes without saying at this point, but naturally, I was a big fan of all that too. The way this unlikely duo hits it off surprisingly well as soon as they find something they have in common was very sweet, and like I just talked about with Tarou and Sonoi, very very poignant for what is clearly a major focus of Donbrothers thematically. I have no idea whether or not the show actually wants to do some kind of soap opera thing with Miho and Natsumi yet, and thankfully, with drama this good, it kinda doesn't matter which way that goes right now? These characters continue to be fantastically well-realized, and I'm excited for what's next, no matter what actually *is* next. I mean, just about the last thing I expected from this series was closing out an episode with Tsuyoshi realizing he's okay with condemning a man to death, and yet, as soon as it happened, all I could think about was how interesting a new wrinkle in his character that is. And also how scarring that might be for the kids watching this show, but hey, that's also something you can expect from Inoue!

It's like I'm watching Faiz again but everything's considerably more funny and energetic than in that show. Like I dunno, I'm smiling to myself a whole ton while Taro and Blue Man intrigue one another and while Tsubasa and Tsuyoshi are connecting by talking about their love interests who are probably the same person. It's a ton of fun and also I'm excited to see the inevitable shoes drop. ...Though hopefully these plot threads don't take too long to develop, like near the end of the show, as has been the case in most Sentai!
Side note, I do already think DonMomotaro is cool and all, but seeing this week's action sequence try so hard to make him GokaiRed is... 'embarrassing' seems too negative a word especially since I did find it really amusing and even fun, but it's the first word that comes to my mind ^_^; |

Damn that ending is dark. That will definitely come back to bite Kijino in the butt. I was always thinking his relationship is too perfect, the previous angle of him not being good enough didn't pan out so now they make him into an actual psycho who Miho will undoubtedly leave once she finds out he's okay with killing people.
Or they use that cliche to make something good instead, who knows. It's definitely not something I expected to see in a Sentai show though, at least not in the modern ones I'm familiar with. Quote:
If this were Faiz, the rest of the cast would still believe Inuzuka is a criminal, and continue to do so, until the second-to last episode when his girlfriend magically shows up and explains everything. Via inner monologue so the other characters won't know of course. Man Faiz was awful, I'm glad to have that behind me so I never have to watch it again. Quote:

Can't really avoid that entirely though, given the reason the show exists, but I was content with the gimmick being used by the CGI-Rangers to give them actual suits. It doesn't fit Don Momotaro, I agree. |

I agree, transforming into other suits is something I'm ready to take a break from for a while. I know its just anniversary stuff, but I get a little worried that the big 3 Tokusatsu are too self referential. I was excited for Reiwa to be a nice reset, but so far its actually the opposite.
Anyway, about the episode: I loved it. Great character interactions, a good mix of a few answers and some new questions. It definitely has me eagerly awaiting each episode to see what happens next. And that's all you can really ask for in any good show!

Supposedly, the reason for DonMomos flurry of Avatar Changes in this ep was because during mid production, they realized that DonMomo hadn't been using the Avatar Changes at all throughout the show, and so made him do a bunch in this ep to make up for it. Episode 1 was also in mid production at the time, so they were able to make DonMomo transform in Zenkaizer in that.

The good thing about this is that I was generally happy to see some previous stuff return. Zyuoh Eagle's suit for example because I love Zyuohger, and honestly - when they did the Ryusoulger Alter and Don Momotaro said "Come on, Tyramigo!", well... it hit me. I miss Tyramigo. Dude was super fun.
Tyramigo going around town being all nice and stuff needs a sequel, that was so good. So yeah, some of those "Legacy" things have the intended effect on me. Same with the "Lupinranger~"-transformation voice. Catchy as hell. Quote:

But for me it made sense that he wasn't using it much, just doesn’t seem to be his style, he favors the Alter-thing more. "Avatar Change" is the signature ability of Rangers who want to save the production team the cost of animating their terrible looking CG bodies. Also, first pink male Ranger rocking the old "girly" suits with skirts does rule. Last edited by Kiwami; 04-25-2022 at 11:48 AM.. |

I didn't expect Kiji Brother has a dark side in his personality. I think this is really surprising.
The relationship between Momotaro and Sonoi in their civilian form is really interesting. They're also trying to save people in the burning building. It's so ironic when currently I prefer DonBrothers story than Revice story. This really similar situation when I prefer Go-Busters than Fourze. |

Was this the first episode with no Haruka narration?
