I guess clarification makes it clear that Super Sentai is officially done and is not affiliated with Project R.E.D.
My take on this is Toei is likely putting the brand on ice to let Hasbro either succeed or fail with their Power Rangers reboot before deciding to do anything again with Sentai. If the reboot succeeds then Project R.E.D. will serve as a competitor to Power Rangers. If it fails then Toei can scoop up the Power Rangers IP for cheap and resume Sentai and Power Rangers under a single umbrella. |

I've been meaning to yap about this when I saw the news, but now that I have some time and we now official confirmation that Super Sentai is ending (I will miss it), let's get into it!
So, Gavan's back as the star of this new series, which is neat (I still need to finish the original one), but now in red! Strange, I thought we already had a Red Space Sheriff... On the subject of the name "Project Records. (of) Extraordinary. Dimensions" definitely sounds like a nice broad layout for a series, like people have pointed out on the "rebranding" rumor. First, like I said when Zeztz was revealed, it kind of seems like they're trying to create a "standard" for their shows, with Kamen Rider falling into the Grasshopper aesthetic every now and again, like Ultraman, and Red being the main color of every Sentai Protagonist (except maybe Zenkaizer) AND many of Toei's old superheroes, this seems like an interesting direction to take things. Though I do wonder if that means we won't get any more Red Riders (doubt it but still funny to think about)? Second, depending on how Gavan Infinity turns out, seeing revivals of old Toei Superheroes would be neat (given how the name sounds like that might be the case)! Kyodain, Zubat, Akumaizer 3, Kikaider... Or just plain "new" Red Heroes going forward. Though I feel like they'll stick with revivals to test the waters to create a formula that can coexist with Rider, which depending on the series could contest with Project R.E.D. so I do wonder how things will play out. And while I've already said in the Sentai Ending thread, I will miss it, but I also understand that this was probably inevitable. I still kind of doubt Power Rangers was a big reason, since they probably prioritize its domestic earnings more like they do with Rider, but if Power Rangers does manage to fill the void Sentai leaves behind that'd be neat. But at least we can probably get Sentai Specials on TTFC (which I don't think I've watched any of the specials they've been putting on there), so it will be nice to see some returning faces. But for now, I'm looking forward to seeing what Project R.E.D. has in store as Sentai's heir to the Super Hero mantle.

But I also think Power Rangers had an influence on Toei's new concept. After all, for some reason the new franchise is called Project Red, not Red Hero. This means they'll use the same abbreviation, PR. On the other hand, it rejects the idea of Hasbro's rights to the franchise. After all, just using PR instead of the full name even once is grounds for a lawsuit. Even if it's unwinnable, it didn't stop Hasbro from suing DC over Bumblebee's nickname. It might seem like I'm arguing with myself here, so I'll summarize. My opinion: Toei took the Power Rangers into account when creating Project Red. But only as a concept, not as a competitor or a threat to their plans. |
