I have quite a bit to say about Super Sentai and how much joy it has brought me, but for now, have a commemorative piece of art I drew to celebrate 50 Years of Heroes! I will be waiting for the day when Super Sentai returns.

Well, I've watched Gorenger. Don't let its age and length put you off: it's a wonderful series that has aged much better than its peers and even some of the 90s fare. It has captivating plots, large-scale action scenes, and likable characters. The main feature is that there's a real arms race between the Eagle and the Black Cross Army. Every innovation builds on previous developments, both their own and the enemy's. In my opinion, none of the subsequent shows have been able to replicate this effect. I also think it's worth noting that Gorenger isn't just the first Super Sentai. It's a show that creates Super Sentai as it airs. Therefore, it's constantly changing, making Gorenger far less repetitive than most Showa shows. Add to this the fact that the stuntmen were clearly new to working as a team and hadn't yet acquired the coherence typical of Super Sentai. So even when the characters repeat the same actions, it looks different. Although this reuse of footage makes it much easier to spot.
It's also funny that most of the repeated plots and monsters in the show itself appear relatively late. Needless to say, even the famous finisher, Gorenger Hurricane, isn't invented until the second half of the show. This makes me think about the similarities between Gorenger and MMPR.Both shows dragged on too long, but had they been shorter, they probably wouldn't have spawned such long-running franchises. I also can't help but notice a funny detail. Apparently, due to the larger number of episodes, the typical promotional trip of the period was spread out over several episodes, giving the actors at least some semblance of a vacation. Apparently, Tarou's parents didn't let him go, so Gorenger found another child sidekick at the resort. I also wanted to dispel one popular myth about Gorenger. In the descriptions, I often came across the statement that "after starting off dark, the show then becomes more vivid and ridiculous." This is not true. There were plenty of tragic and funny episodes both at the beginning and the end. For example, the stories about Asuka's frame-up and Peggy's love take place right before the finale. I'd rather say that Gorenger's plots become increasingly fantastical over time. Which, incidentally, makes JAKQ a perfectly logical thematic continuation. Of course, the show isn't without its flaws. It's too drawn-out, and despite what I said earlier, it can't completely avoid repetition. At times, the action is too naive, and at other times, it's simply driven by the logic of "because it's necessary for the plot." The fight choreography is in keeping with the spirit of its time, and the aforementioned lack of synchronicity sometimes makes the proceedings resemble a drunken brawl in fancy dress. I would also personally consider the true appearance of the F?hrer of the Black Cross a drawback, even though he did delight with his metamorphosis at the end. But the initially announced hidden figure with huge glowing eyes looked much more impressive, so the reveal is inevitably disappointing. Something more interesting could have been invented. And yet, for me, the pros of Gorenger far outweigh the cons, so I confidently recommend everyone watch the show. ![]() P.S. By the way, after watching Gorenger, I became even more convinced of my headcanon about Denziman as the first Super Sentai. Gorenger invented the show's formula and spent a long time refining it. JAKQ and Ninja Captor, a close relative of Super Sentai, tried to change that formula, with less than stellar results. Battle Fever added a giant robot and learned how to operate it. And Denziman begun working according to this complex and well-refined algorithm. Last edited by Mesnick; 01-11-2026 at 08:28 PM.. |

Well, only a few more episodes of Gozyuger till we say bye to Super Sentai. So let's try this.
Which specific ranger suit do you like the most from each show? Let's keep it to one suit only per show for simplicity. Feel free to share why if you want as well. *NOTE* - ONE SUIT ONLY PER SHOW. - I am separating Lupat into Lupinranger and Patranger since they are distinct teams with distinct suits. - Feel free to choose a power-up/variant form for your pick if you want, for example, Mega Black in Mega Tector, Gokai Christmas, or even Oedo Hurricane Red. - NO POWER RANGERS STUFF, ONLY SUPER SENTAI since it's what we're celebrating. That said, Deka Red Battlizer is A-OK because it made it into a sentai show. ![]() - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SUITS. So pick one you like even if you didn't see the show. ![]() [50 SENTAI SUIT FAVORITES LIST] 1. GORENGER - Aorenger. The specific blue they chose for the original suit made in the 70s pops and helps the chevrons and boots stand out as well, I think. 2. JAKQ - Clover King. While the other suits play around with extra colors for the visors, this suit kept it quite uniform, making it stand out as a result. 3. BATTLE FEVER J - Battle Kenya. Love the whole wildcat vibe it has going for its helmet and love the green, yellow, and red elements over black. Green doesn't pop, but for this suit it doesn't bother me as much. 4. DENZIMAN - Denzi Blue. Just the right amount of stripes. And ANPAN FTW. ![]() 5. SUNVULCAN - Vul Shark. Helmet ornament staying blue helps it stand out for me. 6. GOGGLE V - Goggle Black. The visor and gemstone crest on the helmet looks nice altogether. Overall, black works the best, aesthetically, for the Goggle V suit template, IMO. 7. DYNAMAN - Dyna Yellow. Black trim on yellow was a nice touch. 8. BIOMAN - Pink Five. I think the suit color not being a part of the circuitry on the chest area helps the color pop. Also, the forehead circuitry design feels like the right amount of complexity compared to the others. 9. CHANGEMAN - Change Mermaid. This must've been a real doozy for the designer at the time. But, they pulled through by giving the suit pink trims to help it stand out and not look like the power-down version of the suits from Turboranger. ![]() 10. FLASHMAN - Blue Flash. The brow of the visor did all the work. 11. MASKMAN - Red Mask. The V-shape/chevron elements of the helmet works the best with the suit template. And something about it screams, "I'M THE RED FREAKIN' RANGER" to me. 12. LIVEMAN - Green Sai. Angular elements on the helmet and the green and white color scheme works. 13. TURBORANGER - Red Turbo. The fact that he has a sports car motif and how the color transition of white chest area > yellow trim > red suit invokes fire/hotrod flames for me work so well when your team is called Turboranger. Which is befitting, considering Riki's last name Honoh means "flame" in Japanese. 14. FIVEMAN - Five Red. Visor was really well done. 15. JETMAN - Yellow Owl. Same principle as Dyna Yellow. I akso love the helmet design. Plus, we don't have that many owls in Super Sentai. 16. ZYURANGER - Dragonranger. The day I saw this suit in action my jaw dropped at how amazing it looked. The gloves and boots having cones instead of rhombuses helped distinguish it from the others, and THAT DRAGON ARMOR. Need I say more? ![]() 17. DAIRANGER - Shishiranger. Like Dragonranger, green with white and gold are a match made in heaven. Also love the helmet. 18. KAKURANGER - Ninja Black. Very clean-looking suit. nuff said. ![]() 19. OHRANGER - Kingranger. The golden 王 king kanji as the visor made quite an impact, and the gold armor/trims are quite the nice touch. 20. CARRANGER - Red Racer. Minoru/Green Racer is my favorite of the show, but I'd be lying if I didn't pick the Red Racer suit for this. Visor did all the work, here. ![]() 21. MEGARANGER - Mega Silver. I think the silver suit with gold trims and green accents on the chest area give off circuit board vibes and a nice prototype/unfinished tech aesthetic to it. 22. GINGAMAN - Ginga Blue. Gorilla motif was really well depicted on the helmet, I think. 23. GOGOV - Go Blue. This was tough, considering how simple the design is. But, Go Blue wins it for me, mostly because how the blue contrasts the gold belt and the shield design that is the visor seems more pleasing to me. 24. TIMERANGER - Time Green. The rhombus visor is the most unique deisgn, and had it not been for it I would've gone with Yellow for my pick. 25. GAORANGER - Gao Yellow. I love this suit when it has its wings out. ![]() 26. HURRICANGER - Kabutoraiger. Not a lot of ranger suits come in crimson/burgundy. This does. ![]() 27. ABARANGER - Abare Black. Black and gold with a pinch of violet hits hard. ![]() 28. DEKARANGER - Deka Break. Navy and gold over white was an excellent choice. ![]() 29. MAGIRANGER - Magi Shine. Frog Prince Aladdin Ranger with Cat Genie FTW. ![]() 30. BOUKENGER - Bouken Yellow. The visor works well with the suit template the most, I think 31. GEKIRANGER - Geki Red. Best Bruce Lee tribute ever. Plus, I really love the way they did the tiger stripes for it.32. GO-ONGER - Go-On Red. Overall just a nice representation of the show, IMO. And it managed to pull of the triangle visor well for me. 33. SHINKENGER - Shinken Red. The way they did the 火 fire kanji as the visor was genius. ![]() 34. GOSEIGER - Gosei Blue. Kinda like Go Blue, Blue and gold color combo at work again. This time, fancy gold trims. 35. GOKAIGER - Gokai Red. The perfect red ranger suit for an anniversary show about pirates. ![]() 36. GO-BUSTERS - Stag Buster. Color scheme and helmet did all the work. 37. KYORYUGER - Kyoryu Red. Out of all the tyranno suits, this takes the cake. :rock 38. TOQGER - ToQ1 Dark. I loved how they textured a black suit with that holographic look. 39. NINNINGER - Shironinger. Pink trims on white just works well. 40. ZYUOHGER - Zyuoh Whale. Captain-in-a-coat look is fire. ![]() 41. KYURANGER - Koguma Sky Blue. A unique color suit with some decent amount of extra flair. Scarf was a nice touch. 42. LUPINRANGER - Lupin Red. A nice example of how to match black and red effectively. 43. PATRANGER - Patren U. Patranger's Trinity Form. ![]() 44. RYUSOULGER - Ryusoul Red Noblesse. That navy-colored cape was a nice addition. ![]() 45. KIRAMAGER - Kiramai Gold. Dear Toei-san, my inner Raging Counter-Strike Kid wishes to enquire about a previous decision of yours. *tears keyboard in half* ![]() Seriously, as goofy as it was, it was decent IMO and a truly missed opportunity. 46. ZENKAIGER - Zenkaiser. A nice tribute to Akarenger while not being a red ranger. ![]() 47. DONBROTHERS - Don Momotaro. Never in my life did I expect to see a more accurate depiction of Momotaro in toku. Den-O Sword Form slaps, but THIS IS MOMOTARO right here. ![]() 48. KING-OHGER - Papillon-Ohger. Best periwinkle-colored suit ever, that's for sure. The pastel-y hue is a nice addition in a team where the saturation for red, blue, and yellow is cranked up to 11. Visor is really well done, too. ![]() 49. BOONBOOMGER - Bun Orange. I love all six of the suits, but had to go with this. Compared to Bun Black, the off-road tire aesthetic is more prominent, and the matching of orange with white and hints of black work for me. Also, suit looks great in action along with Genba's swagger. 50. GOZYUGER - Wild Gozyu Wolf. N GAMIO ZEDA RULEZ! YEEEAAAHHHHHH. ![]() Okay, said it before in my best of 2025, but I really love the use of gold and red for it. And these are my picks. What are yours?

Aoranger The arrow-like visor looks appropriate for the team's ace pilot. Big One Has a classic heroic appearance and gets extra points for being able to morph without needing a pod. Miss America The hair is unique, the blue gloves and boots add that extra Americanness and Goranger's Komaki is the suit actress. Denji Pink The visor conveys that girly image without resorting to the heart shape. Vul Eagle The yellow stripes across the helmet are a nice touch, like an eagle's wings in motion. Goggle Black A Black Ranger with an emerald motif is unique. Dyna Red I think these suits are too generic, honestly. Pink Five Basically the same reason as yours. Change Griffon Due to Gokaiger and Zenkaiger using it, the only thing I remember about Changeman (as I haven't watched it yet) is Magma Galaxy, so I feel like this guy must be some kind of bad*ss. Pink Flash Flashman suits are some of my favorites, but only she has sparkly boots. Yellow Mask Ninjas, duh. Red Falcon Out of the Red bird-themed Ranger suits, this one's my favorite. His beak is so big and intimidating. Red Turbo My favorite car-themed Ranger suit in general. Five Red I guess it looks the cleanest without any thin visor lines messing with the vertical stripe. Black Condor See my reason for Change Griffon above, but in this case, I know he's a bad*ss even without anniversary shows reminding me. Dragon Ranger The GOAT. Kiba Ranger I feel like the core Dairanger's white torsos make them look empty, but of course he doesn't have that problem. Ninja White A white ninja is elegant for sure. Oh Pink Something about the circular visor looks right. Redracer The shape of the grill visor looks more "geki", I guess. Mega Yellow Not a big fan of how similar these suits look and the lack of glove/boot cuffs, but with the yellow accents, she stands out more. Ginga Red Lights of Ginga Lights of Ginga are a great minimalistic power-up that adds to the mystic appeal of the basic Gingaman suits without changing the foundation and Ginga Red is the coolest to me. Go Red Well, the only significant variable here is the visors. Green and Pink look the same, Yellow is square, not sure what Blue's supposed to be. Red gives the most impression of a face on a team with emotionless helmets. Time Fire The black accents on the gloves and boots gave him the edge I think the core Timerangers were missing. Gao Red Similar reason why I like Ginga Red, I guess. The lion motif works for both of them, but especially for Gao Red. Kabutoraiger We've had Navy Rangers like Deathryuger and almost Navy Rangers like Ryusoul Gold, but feels like Crimson is among the rarest. Abare Black Abare Mode Reminds me of how awesome it was in Fighting Spirit when Tommy finally unlocked it. Deka Break I like how he has the Roman numeral VI and how his morpher is so functional in battle, like catching bullets at super speed. Wolzard The most bad*ss character in the show who happens to share a name with another bad*ss wolf guy from Zero One. Bouken Silver The black accents highlight the dazzling silver more, in a way that's a little more interesting than the core 5. Mele The only Ranger I know who has an articulated mouth. The green/purple color scheme totally works for the mysterious chameleon motif. Go-On Silver I'd say Go-On Wings are pretty equal with each other in design, but I generally prefer Silver Rangers to Golds. Hyper Shinken Red The power of Kyoryumaru is awesome and with the jacket being red, it naturally looks best on Takeru or Kaoru. Gosei Blue Goseiger suits are some of my favorites and the visual of the shark biting from the side in to the visor is cool. For the angel motif, blue and white looks the most appropriate. Gokai Red Twokaizer does the design best though. Stagbuster He and Beet got me to watch the show after a long hiatus. Kyoryu Gold A pterodactyl-themed Ranger with the thunder element makes a lot of sense. Since I played Horizon, it also reminds me of a massive Stormbird, even though that's an eagle. Wagon If you insist I choose a Ranger, then I'll begrudgingly give it to ToQ-5. Chouzetsu Starninjer Starninjer is my favorite suit of the main team and seeing him get to use Chouzetsu against his arch enemy was pretty cool. Zyuoh Shark Best looking visor on the team and the last female Blue for the forseeable future. Phoenix Soldier I generally don't like the designs in Kyuranger, but holy moly, this one is a legendary Sixth Ranger suit. Lupin Yellow The rounded shape of the hat visor gives me that mischievous feeling that I associate with phantom thieves. Patren 1 Likewise, the straightforward shape gives the image of a passionate hotblooded cop dedicated to justice. Max Ryusoul Red The metallic knight appearance of Gaisoulg looks awesome on Ryusoul Red and has the thematic importance of Koh making his soul one with Nada. Kirama Silver He's the last silver Ranger that emphasizes that color and it's a wonder suit with a strong feeling. Super Zenkaizer He's a Dragonzord Ranger, that's awesome. Such a shame this suit is lying idle in a Toei warehouse when the design is begging for PR to use it. Sonoi I don't like the overly black core Donbrothers suits, but I like the Noto and he has the most intimidating knight appearance. Kuwagata Ohger The stag beetle horns rising from the helmet totally scream King of Evil! Bun Violet Looks like he could actually be an F1 driver. Wild Gozyu Wolf Takes the already cool Gozyu Wolf and infuses it with even more of Hoeru's rebellious spirit.
