What is the etymology of Heisei Rider names? For example, Kiva is a likely play on 'Kiba', or 'Fang'. Kuuga is a word derived from the Grongi themselves, but where was it sourced from during the conception stage? Same for Agito, Faiz, Hibiki?

Well now, that was interesting! I originally asked the etymology of the Heisei Riders, and got some fascinating answers, so thanks for that!
To complete the curiosity and keep the streak alive, what about the etymology of Heisei Rider Villains? If anyone is interested in such information. |
Orphnoch is a portmanteau of Orpheus and Enoch(clever cause both have relations to life and death)
Imagin is a portmanteau of imagine and majin, which makes sense in that their form is the result of people's imaginations Fangire is a portmanteau of fang and vampire Dopant is befitting in that the gaia memory is an impurity that is injected in to the human body to change people Zodiarts is just a portmanteau of Zodiac and arts it seems though I am unsure what the arts has to do in a contextual sense Inves apparently derives from the term Invasive Species it seems Ganma literally translates to eye demon which matches the whole eye concept Bugster is a portmanteau of bug and monster |

Does anyone have any idea where the term "Driver" comes from? Most Kamen Rider transformation items these days have Driver in the name but I don't think I've ever heard anyone question what it means exactly.

Am I the only one who misses the early 2000's kamen rider? The newer shows just feel too....bright and shiny....I guess. I don't know how to put my finger on it, but the older shows like agito,blade,ryuki and kuuga are just more interesting to watch. I guess its the darker visuals and quieter belts. Garo feels similar but not quite the same.

Every show is a product of its time, that's what it boils down to. Today's shows are more colorful and put a heavier emphasis on toy advertisements. While I do prefer how earlier Heisei shows handled things I just want to watch a good product, and most of the new shows are really good. Like, Ex-Aid, for example, had wacky suits and the Driver was a particularly noisy one but the show and its characters were well-written and the action was quite excellent and that's all I can ask of a Rider show really. Having a bit more of a serious tone and a mute belt won't necessarily save a show from being trash. |
The early and mid 2000's Kamen Rider shows from 2000-2005 felt less toy gimmicky compare to the shows now if you ask me. While I do like the 2010's Kamen Rider shows like W, OOO and Gaim, but I do agree that the toy gimmicks can be annoying for a viewer. I feel like they need to write in the toys without coming off as a big commercial or being some random dues ex machina.
You can sell toys for kids in a kids show without being toy gimmicky. Dragon Ball Super is made to promote merchandise and it is not as many toy driven stuff as Sentai and Kamen Rider does (Sentai, Kamen Rider and DB are all from Toei and Bandai). |
'W' was my first foray into Modern Riders and it took like 20 episodes to get used to constantly hearing the belt talking. "CYCLONE!!!! JOKE-AHHHH!"
..then I watched a couple Episodes of 'OOO' and the belt is all like, "Shooby Du Wap Wap!! Skeedly-Ee-Doo!" ... and I went back to watching Showa era and Kuuga and Agito. I'm slowing making my way back to OOO's though, so I know I'll just have to get used to it. I do want to watch all of the series so getting used to the loud belts will just have to be part of it I guess. None of it makes me want to buy a driver toy though. I've thought about buying a 'W' driver just because it looks cool,..but I haven't. I get the figures instead. |
