Please remember to keep things civil everyone. I’ve gone ahead and messaged both parties.

I've been trying to figure something out, and figured it would be best to ask here since Kamen Rider is the highest earning tokusatsu I know of. How much money does something like Kamen Rider earn vs. big anime and manga franchises on a year-by-year basis? I'm inclined to say it earns more than at the vast majority of anime and manga franchises, especially if you only consider earnings within Japan, but I've been struggling to find an actual breakdown that goes over KR's earnings vs. a highly popular competitor like... Jujutsu Kaisen or something along those lines. Anyone got some cool statistics for me?
|
Currently, it makes over 25 million yen
|
Kamen Rider is consistently on this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...dia_franchises
But a large part of that is how its one big franchise versus a lot of properties that only last a few years or so. Year over year it's still pretty high compared to individual anime and manga. You can find more granular breakdowns in the notes of that page. |
A bit shocking to me it makes as much as Sonic with no real global presence! Speaking of a lack of global presence, it's really funny to me that it's a fair bit below both Ultra and Sentai when it's wildly the opposite when looking at JP sales
|
Yeah, the lack of global presence for Rider makes it really hard to explain to people how insanely popular it is in Japan. That top grossing franchise page on Wikipedia would probably help in the future. Definitely telling people from now on that Kamen Rider makes more money than PAW Patrol. :p

What's a good movie or special to introduce somebody to Kamen Rider? My gf is interested in it, but I'm not sure what to show her. I thought something quick that could be watched from start to finish would be better than a 50-episode series, otherwise I'll just start Den-O and have her join me.
On a side note, what do I need to watch before Kamen Sentai Gorider? |

As for something short: - ZO is a nice compact bit of action and Rider at its basics, with some beautiful modelwork, but that basic nature is as much a flaw as it is the charm. - Kamen Rider The First is a movie length reworking of the originl 1971 premise, but is very mid-2000's in its asthetics, and bit or miss as to what bits of the adaptations work. - Show her Super Hero Taisen and pray for the best. |
If you wanna use a movie as the introduction, my vote would go towards either Kamen Rider The First or Kamen Rider J. The Kabuto movie could also work, if you decide to start watching Kabuto the series right after it.

I've thought about The First a few times, and we both enjoy the mid-2000s Japan vibe, so that's not a bad idea. Super Hero Taisen isn't a bad idea either, especially since she wants to introduce me to Pretty Cure through one of the all-stars movies. Honestly though, I wish Shin Kamen Rider was coming out sooner. That looks like it'd be perfect. |

I haven't seen every ending of the various series it references, but the exposition takes care of enough to get the gist. |
Kamen Rider W is a good choice for newbies.

Wonder what animals/creatures/dinosaurs would fit these Vistamps similar to the Condor, White Leo & Quetzalcoatlus?
|
Question. I noticed this throughout ryuki and I just encountered it again in Hibiki in episode 27 when Tsutomu goes to his friend. In the background is an news broadcast on the radio in English and I'm just curious why they would be listening to that? It was constantly in the background of Ore Journal in Ryuki.
|
Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think is the better ending for Ryuki, the main show’s final few episodes or the Episode Final movie? Probably a rather stupid question but still.
|
I don't know if this is a common view but I actually genuinely like elements of both being as the movie sort of leaves it ambiguous. What I didn't like, however, was the 13 Riders special. Some of the stories involving Kamen Rider Verde I just found a bit pathetic!

So, what did you think what Verde, Femme, and Ryuga would've like had they made their appearances in the main Ryuki series proper and what roles, whether it be major or minor, could have played into it?
This has been bugging me since going through Ryuki since the show only featured 10 Riders rather than supposedly 13 of them. The creators probably think the term, 13 Riders, either sounds cooler or it just roll of the tongue better than the actual 10 Riders for all I know. Guess the world may never know. *shrugs* |

So, I'm pretty sure my next series is going to be Den-O. However, I have a few other seasons that I have full fansubs downloaded for. How would you rank these in terms of which you would recommend?
1971, Amazon, Black, Kuuga, Kabuto, Den-O, Build |
Quote:
Build Kuuga Black Amazon Kabuto Den-O I exclude 1971 since I never fully watched it, and want to note that I like all of these shows so it's not like I hate Den-O or anything. |
Of that list, just watch Kabuto.
|
Quote:
Black Kuuga Den-O '71 Build Amazon Kabuto All good shows, though. '71 is a pretty massive undertaking considering the length and age. Amazon, on the other hand, is short but deeply weird. |

Build Kabuto Kuuga Amazon Black Den-O 1971 I only consider Den-O and 1971 to be particularly questionable quality. Den-O's tone and characters just didn't appeal to me at all and 1971 is a massive undertaking with some really inconsistent quality. All the others are good fun in their own ways! |

Black Kuuga Den-O Amazon 1971 Kabuto |

That list reads like a list of my favorite series! You can't go wrong with any of those
|
So I ranked them based on results so far, and it seems like the general consensus is
Build Kuuga Black Kabuto Den-O/Amazon 1971 I've heard Build is one of the best, so it being so high is no surprise to me. What is a surprise is how low Den-O got, considering it's usually considered one of the best among Japanese fans. I mean, it keeps getting new movies for a reason. Black being the most popular showa entry is no surprise either. I actually started 1971, because I've been reading the manga and wanted to see how they compare. I'm planning on doing a review video at some point, and it'll be nice to reference the series. I'm not going to watch this consistently, though - it's more of a "I'll put it on when I feel like it" type of thing. I still want the next full season I watch to be Den-O, but I guess I can probably go in this order after that. Meaning, Den-O -> Build -> Kuuga. Thanks all. edit: I've seen some of 1971 before, but I enjoyed it much more then. This is actually kind of difficult to watch. |
Would Amazing Falchion and Nadeshiko count as Future Riders if their appearances are what is considered the 'present' for the cast?
I was thinking cuz my go-to description for Future Riders would be riders from the future coming into the present. |
Can someone please explain to me what 'Aruto ja naito' translates to? I have a feeling it's a pun and its driving me nuts. The multiple fan-translations of it don't help either.

But I love the Imagin so I enjoyed watching Den-O. |
Quote:
I'm small-brained when it comes to japanese, but from what I understand he's basically just saying "Yes, it must be Aruto!" that's why some localizations have it as "That's how you know it's Aruto!" |
I read on Reddit like 2 years ago that by taking the sentence apart you basically get a giant pun since "Aru" = "To be" and "Ja nai" is the negative form of that.
So by translating it that way you can read something like "To be and not to be and" so basically wordplay. I have no idea if this is true though. |
Aruto ja naito is more of a nonsensical catchphrase. It doesn't really have a direct 1:1 translation but the feeling of it is like "It wasn't me!" The joke part is that "me" is him saying his own name therefore implicating himself.
So like Kiwami said, it is as if he is simultaneously admitting to something and also claiming innocence; in most cases a bad joke that he won't take credit for unless you thought it was funny then he will take credit for it. An American equivalent is like when you tell a bad joke and then immediately say "just kidding, but for real though..." |
Okay now it makes sense. "It was me, except not, but actually yes" basically, I quite like the idea that he attaches his name in a way that can be read as either "It wasn’t me!" or "It was Aruto!" depending on if you like the joke or not. Actually a great catchphrase for a comedian.
|
I agree with Kiwami, the popularity of the show is tied to how well received the Imagin are; and part of the reason they kept doing more Den-O content was because the Imagin are just stuntmen and VA probably already on the Toei payroll.
The show itself has some decent themes, but for me it all got muddled by the last couple episodes. It just felt like it was running in place. There's a big revelation that is just randomly dropped that would have made for a better final arc (unless it comes up in movies I haven't watched yet) But Epsilon, I highly recommend giving Kabuto a shot as well |
It's a disappointment to hear that the Imagen are basically the deciding factor on whether somebody likes Den-O or not. I guess we'll see.
