Well, Shadow Moon was also counted as a Rider in the recent NHK poll. Seems like this is now Toei's definitive stance.

Meanwhile, they've always waffled on whether or not Shadow Moon was a Rider. Honestly, whenever Toei staff talks about Shadow Moon, you can flip a coin as to whether they consider him a rider or a rider-style villain :lol |
Honestly, it just hit me that Black is a bug monster under the suit. By the power of the sun he becomes regular black and you know gets the suit. Then he further evolved to RX with the power of the sun and the kingstone acting as a conduit. Black Sun is like a perversion of the power that the sun bestows on kotaro, removing the cover that hides his monstrous form and evolving him into a shin like creature. At least thats my guess.
Also wonder what shadow moon will look like. |
This is going to be amazing!

It's anti-Redman and also Golgom propaganda, don't bother :lol

Hey I know this is old news by now but it's really only just now hitting me. Am I the only one who thinks those shirts with the stop kaijin hate slogan are really bad and distasteful? Like they're taking imagery from real-world movements and making it into a goofy merch???

Black Sun & ShadowMoon.
|
Huh, not quite sure how to feel about that design
|
Black Sun looks great, but I'm a little disappointed that Shadowmoon is a rework of Black. I was hoping he was more mechanical to contrast the organic look.
Would love these as SHFs though |
Yes. Yes! YES! YEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
      |
I need toys yesterday.
The subtle influences from the 90s trilogy designs on these suits isn't lost on me, either. The helmets have some ZO/J vibes while the organic bits on the body seem to take inspiration from Shin. |
I actually really like the designs here! My only gripe is that I wish the eyes were colored red and green respectively for each character, especially for Black sun since his design is mostly a sea of black. I think red eyes as well adding the red lining on the chest and legs could have helped break it up a bit more.
|
Well, I guess Black is in the name, but maybe he could have afforded some eye color. Either that, or they'll glow at certain points in the show, which would be neat.
Shadow Moon, on the other hand, looks great (heck, they both do), and the bikes are certainly bulky, but still look very nice. Do agree that it would have been nice to see him more mechanical in contrast to Black's organic look. Quote:

I'm almost certain their eyes will light up at some point.
You know something, they could've brought back Black's original Vital Charger belt 1:1 and it would have still fit perfectly with this suit design. |
Those designs are very SIC and I am absolutely down with that.
|
I'm loving the ZO and J vibes Black gives off. Super cool suit designs, and I bet this suit will look extra cool in action.
Shadow Moon I'm pretty attached to the robotic aesthetic. The organic look helps tie them together, but eh. |
I am in absolute love with these designs!!

As reimaginings of the original suits, I'm not really a fan of them. Amazons did a better job staying faithful while reimagining and updated the design.
As designs on their own, however, they look awesome. |

On their own they're fine though. |
whoa
bit too... edgy, for me. |
I like it, but not as a live action Kamen Rider Black.
It also looks more in line with what we got with RX?which is weird. The RX series had a less serious tone and yet it looked more like the Ishinimori Design (Batta Man) It?s all weird x) |
Not really digging these. Neither have the personality or identity of the originals. They're very generic sci-fi bug men. The elegance and character of the original Black designs is nowhere to be found here.
Not bad suits by themselves but poor updates to the characters. Overdone IMO. |
I'm not a big fan. I quite like the balance of suit and organic elements on the original black, but this skews too organic bugman for a good update. If you gave these a new head and changed the deco you'd basically have Another Rider versions of Black and Shadow Moon.
|
I like the SIC-ness of it all and I like how they made Shadow Moon a little more gaudy than Black Sun with them edge lord spikes and those metallic details. :lolol
Could it have been better? Yes, but I'm enjoying what I'm seeing so far. One thing I wish to see is that they have him go from green to black when he transforms, cause that would be an awesome tribute to the manga. |
My initial reaction was "whoa, I hate these." And while I've warmed to them a little, I'm still not really feeling the designs, especially for Kamen Riders, and especially especially for updates of Black.
Part of what makes Black's design so compelling is its smooth, almost alien simplicity. It's elegant, slim, and maintains a very streamlined silhouette. It balances the darkness of the character's origin with the heroism of his mission, while still maintaining Ishinomori's funky, bubbly weirdness. These are... alien in a different way. They're monstrous and grotesque, which is obviously the point, but I dunno. They could have done a better job of balancing the "hero" part of it instead of going full bore into the monster part. There isn't a hint of levity or irony in the designs, and without that, they feel a tad try-hard, and kind of tip over into edgelord nonsense. Black looks... fine, I guess. I don't hate it. But Shadow Moon is far too overdone -- there's just way too much going on. My eye just doesn't know where to look. They're both... a lot... but Shadow Moon in particular is A LOT a lot. Y'know, I think my main problem is that they're just... not very imaginative? Like, they're kind of bog standard "what if Kamen Rider was for grown ups" fan arts. They fit too well into the SIC and Another Rider design language to be particularly surprising. I'm still looking forward to Black Sun, and I'm sure these suits will look better in motion... but right now these are not the tea for me. |
Is a small fan film donated by fans, right? You prob would or do not expect kamen rider shin, shin ultraman, shin godzilla quality. There might not be shin goremger given the anime jetman base on did a live action squadron and mmpr didnt do well in japan either in serious contemporary take. The sic toy looking suit is kind of whatever. Minami kitaro original actor could pop up via cameo or two. Shadow moon human actor never get to shine or interactz with his nrother black sun in original 1988 since he is already corrup reborn once he appear again. We might see a henshin and alter ego persona instead here.

Not bad, but compared to the Shin Kamen Rider trailer, there's not a lot to gleam from this.
It's just Kotaro walking amongst chaos and then a tease of him and Nobuhiko about to face off. Although to be fair, this is just a teaser vs a full trailer. |

There is also, right at the Fade In, far left, a very strange looking mutant-ish person or something, but i could be seeing it wrong, it goes by very fast. If this is another mutant or whatever, it is the only one seen wearing yellow, which I would otherwise expect has something to do with hatred for mutants? EDIT: Actually, i went through again and as the Ogre looking person runs in from the background we see another monster/mutant looking insectoid person with yellow eyes and a yellow bandana EDIT 2: Also, apparently the signs say things like "Kill the criminal Kaijins", "Don't forget the grudge against them", "There is no place for them", "Kill all Kaijins". So I'm kind of wondering based on the fact the Kaijin are in Human clothing, if KR Black might have the ability to see through the human disguise of Kaijin, because why else would Kaijin be unafraid moving through this Anti-Kaijin protest? I also presume that the Black/Shadow Moon conflict may be more generational in nature, Black is older, and his tech looks older, Shadow moons is all sleek and modern, the "Never forget the grudge against them" sign suggests that something happened with Kaijin long enough ago that some people have moved on or forgotten, and some kids may never have learned. Very interesting Teaser IMO. |
It's crazy how Nishijima is in two major toku franchise titles this year. First Shin Ultraman and now this.

"Controversial reboot version by director Kazuya Shiraishi, who is always seeking for the intense “human” and “violence” dramas."
Toei is aware. |
Cool and epic.

Which of the series do you think will receive a similar newer and more adult rethinking later? I think X, with his tech, gadgets, and memorable villains, would be great in this format. Still, of course, I would like to see Stronger. And not only because "Tackle deserves more!", but also because I would like to see a modern version of Stronger's cybernetic arms.
