Although, as of at least the latest episode of Saber, it looks like we're back to just having producers.

It's not that he left, it's more that he checked out for long periods of time. He only wrote eight episodes after the show's halfway mark and most of those were the finale.

So I'm assuming you haven't heard the story about how Kiriya's death on christmas resulted in a lot of kids crying, desperately wanting him to come back and parents phoning into Toei complaining about having to explain to their kids the concept of death on December 25th?

Well, it happened! There's a story as well of this one particular kid who took his DX Gashapon Sparrow and said he was gonna kill Genm to get Kiriya back. Hope that kid's having a good day

To add on to this. It also didn't help that almost immediately after Kiriya was killed, Toei in all their "infinite wisdom" decided to give japanese kids the good'ol one-two punch (as Liam of Rider Club Radio called it) of:

As well as making a tweet saying: “なんできりやすぐ死んでしまうん” / “Why does Kiriya die so soon” Which is a reference to a line from Grave of the Fireflies.

That's so bad, but I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Oh I didn't know about that one, I do vaguely remember a story from later on in the show where some kids apparently mailed in their Mighty Action X gashats because they wanted to cheer up Emu after seeing him go through some event (I forget which exact one, since Emu had gone through a lot by the later eps).
