Which rider designs do you guys feel were the most wasted?


Imperer had an excellent design that was wasted on a character that was essentially cannon fodder. TheBee never had a consistent user and they pretty much dropped the suit entirely in the latter half of the show. Delta was cool as Kitazaki, but then...err, other guy came in and was completely forgettable (honestly they had like 4 solid candidates for that Rider already in the show and they used none of them).

Of all the Toku I've watched, few have conflicted me more then Kamen Rider Blade. Every time I try and sort out why I'm so conflicted about this series, I begin to drown in a sea of questions and confusion. When I first watched the series, I remember being pretty indifferent to Kenzaki. While he wasn't a bad character, he just came across as really dull to me. I've grown to like more as time goes on though. For a show with so much going on at once, its kinda nice to have a...normal(?) guy to act as an audience surrogate. The ending was what really made me reconsider my feels about him and, while he isn't my favorite rider, help me grow to like him much more then I did at first. Hajime, on the other hand, is one of my favorite secondary Riders and the relationship between him and Kenzaki was probably my favorite part of the show. The day I choose to rewatch Blade is certainly going to be an interesting one...

No joke, Imperor was the main allure for what made me buckle down for Ryuki. I just loved his design (And I was aware that he wasn't a main character from the get go, so I wasn't too let down).

As for wasted designs, I'd say Orga (A sole appearance in an AU movie, until Decade came a long and Diend started throwing every random rider around), Nishiki and Habataki (Same deal as Orga).

For non-movie Riders, I gotta say TheBee, because all of his users truly made a name for themselves once they lost the powers, leaving him rather unmemorable outside of his design, Abyss, for nailing the Ryuki look 8 years later, but being part of a shit show, and Gridon, who just never really popped. Unlike Knuckle and Bravo, he didn't really have shining characterization, and unlike Kurokage(Hase), he was never involved in a game changing event. Neat design, but the character inside it was one I never really cared for.

Blade's ending is what changed Kenzaki from a great character to my all time favorite Rider, and Hajime is one of my favorite secondary characters. The series does explain most of the questions raised, so if you rewatch it, you shouldn't be left confused.

I always had this idea in my head as to how to incorporate Kamen Rider Verde into the full show with a character arc instead of just being a guy in 13 Riders and give Imperor something more to do. Remember how Imperor is the son of a rich guy? In my head, since Verde in 13 Riders was a rich dude, he'd be incorporated into the show as Imperor's dad and they'd have to fight each other, a story arc that I know would be ripe for conflict. Although Verde's not old enough to be his dad, now that I'm checking his wiki page lol.

As for good suits wasted on awful characters, could Ghost count? lol. (I haven't seen the show.)

Trying to think of characters that weren't in movies or specials in shows I have watched... I can't think of any at the moment that were truly bad. Kamen Rider Beast is the closest one I can think of.

Well considering Takumi's dead as of Kamen Rider 4, Kiba's actor passed away and Kusaka's still in hell after Heisei vs Showa he's the only Faiz character they could bring back to resolve the major cliffhanger from the end of Faiz.

I guess I'd say TheBee was wasted. The suit shared a design aesthetic with Kabuto and Gatack, akin to the whole Ryuki/Knight/Zolda thing of having colored suits, since it was presumably designed earlier on (i.e. some of the later Masked Forms looked a little sloppy, and then they just plain forgot with the Hoppers), but after its initial few episodes it just became nothing. Kageyama had a long stretch as TheBee but Yaguruma left a way bigger impact in just a few appearances, because that was the only time TheBee was actually important. And then they both became more memorable as different Riders anyway, so who cares?

I have to admit, I am getting sort of tired of the idealistic/naive/idiot hero archetype that seems to be every main Rider since after W (even though Eiji, Shinnosuke, Kouta, Gentaro and Emu are all excellent protagonists). It'd be nice to get one with a little bit more edge to them, like Takumi or Tendou.

The idealistic/naive/idiot hero is a proper trope which is why they always use them. I also think Toei wants kids to like a hero that is light hearted and won't get the wrong message from them. I think a anti hero main rider may not sell with kids.

Has Kuuga (Godai) ever fought against electricity users? I believe Kuuga would be immune to electrical attacks judging from how he unlocked the 'golden power' we know as Rising and Amazing Mighty

Can't seem to remember any iconic ones right off the bat. I do know Amazing Mighty was achieved by Yuusuke temporarily stopping his heart and then get electroshock which triggered it.

You're absolutely right, although you could feasibly do the "Arrogant JERK Main Rider" and still make it work "with the kids". Simply, the Rider starts off as a conceited jerk, doesn't listen to anyone, tries his own way despite his support cast begging him not to but, of course, this road leads to disaster. Consequently, he learns valuable lessons in trust and friendship, becoming a much stronger Rider as a result. Of course, you'd keep aspects of the earlier persona because, let's face it - bad is cool!

I always thought it was hilarious that Kuuga got form upgrades from a freaking defibrillator. Nothing else is even close to being that strangely mundane.

Also, defibrillators don't restart your heart. So if his heart stopped, he could be struck by lightning and it wouldn't do shit. Humans aren't Frankenstein's monster, after all.

Then TV has always lied to me when showing those in hospital scenes. Not to mention that Kuuga's heart stopping is just a minor, temporary inconvenience

That they have. Kuuga isn't even the worst offense, and it worries me that so many medical shows are basically teaching people how to make things worse.

A defibrillator actually stops your heart if it's beating erradically, so it can resume beating normally by itself. And it doesn't make you flop like a fish when you're shocked, and is actually just as often used on concious patients rather than flatlined "dead" people.

If your heart stops, shocking it won't make it restart. I'm honestly surprised the trope of electric shocks to your heart being a good thing has caught on.

If I recall, the show made it a point that trying to revive Godai was actually a bad idea, and the use of a defibrillator was Godai's decision because of the power boost it had initially given him.

While it doesn't really have much to do with medical science, basically Kuuga was put into the Odinsleep, and the defibrillator just woke him up early. The show made it a point that they almost made things worse when they "Revived" him.

Considering Ex-aid is the only other rider I can think of besides Kuuga that shouts "____ henshin" in order to change forms, I feel like the comparisons are apropriate lol.

That's more of an explanation given than any other fictional use of the device/practice.

I don't know what it has to do with Kamen Rider, but...Let's be real. It'd be RID2015 and G1. As if they'd bring back anything in between :lol

Though yes, I think it would be a pretty cool idea, and I'd totally be down for a massive TF crossover. It would be hell if they just brought back Primes and Bees/Kid appeal characters, so they'd have to have some sort of crazy balance.

The crazy thing about this is that it was a trope that was created and propagated by some lazy screenwriter and it just stuck. Someone with absolutely no life could probably track down "patient zero" on this.

I'm actually not sure. I thought Poppi would be a lot more obnoxious, but she isn't that bad after all. I think she looks better without the wig, but I really like both versions of the character.

Asuna by far. I have a disdain for characters in anime dressed up in weird colors and pushed as super cute and eccentric and Poppy is a live action version of that. It just feels artifical to me, like they're just trying to sell shit to otaku that are easily susceptible/willing to fall for that.

I know Rider is all about selling toys, but in that case, I feel like it's a necessary evil to get the shows made. If there were no toys, these fantastic shows would most likely not exist. But selling Poppy to me is too much.

I keep hoping she'll be like Smart Lady and just creep everyone out personally.

Hypothetically I could agree with that, but I'm with Switchblade on this one. She hasn't really been that *wacky*, despite her character concept.

I mean, between that little kid totally shutting her down in the third episode and the way the CR crew barely react to anything she does (even a guy like Hiiro just treats it like it's the most normal thing ever), it honestly seems like the fact that she's cartoonishly wacky IS the joke, rather than any antics she pulls.

Maybe that'll change down the line or something, but so far there's nothing particularly offensive about her.
