It's Greek to me!
Everyone seems to be talking about the kickass suit and that dumb belt, but that's not what is impressing me. What's impressing me is the theme beyond the basic Wizard motif. That theme is Greek Mythology.
PHANTOMS Let's start with the Phantoms. The motif for them, much like the Zodiarts' zodiac motif, is greek mythical creatures. Our first monster of the day is Minotauros, which is based on the Minotaur (and I think "Minotauros" is an alternate spelling). Then the leaders of the Phantoms are Phoenix and Medusa. Next week looks to be a hellhound. Now, think of the possibilities. Centaurs, harpies, cyclopes, hydra, Cerberus, there's all kinds of fun to be had here. PLAMONSTERS Secondly, the Wizard's familiars (AKA "PlaMonsters"). Wizard currently has 3 familiars, 2 of which are again based in greek mythology. Unicorn and Kraken. Garuda is based in Buddhist mythology, so it's the odd monster out. Personally, I think it looks like a little Phoenix, but they wanted Phoenix to be a villain. Also, Wizardragon is a European style dragon rather than asian. Not exactly greek, but worth noting as that's the kind of that area. ELEMENTS Then there's the directional elements. In terms of classical element systems, there are 4 directional elements. In Wizard they are Earth (Land), Fire, Wind (Air), and Water. Directional elements represent a direction on a compass. In the case of Greek and Japanese classical elements, it's as followed: Earth to the South, Fire to the East, Wind to the North, and Water to the West. There is normally a 5th center element as well and I expect that to be Wizard's highest form and similar to Kuuga's Ulimate form. Now, think of Haruto as the center of the compass. When he henshins, the magic circle appears from the direction of that element: Fire to his left (East), Earth to his feet (South), and Wind above him (North). I've said it once and I'll say it again, I'll bet a donut Water's circle will be to Haruto's right. Also of note is Rinko's last name, Daimon. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but a daimon is a spirit in greek mythology and the root word for demon. That might just be a coincidence though. I think I've heard Daimon as a Japanese surname before. So, that's what I've found in ways of this theme so far. Anyone else catch more themes and motifs? I'm sure there's plenty. PS I need the belt to say "Release the Kraken, PLEASE!" |
I totally did not even catch a lot of those things. You just made me like Wizard a lot more.
I'm not all gaga like everyone else about the belt. It's nice and sleek, but I'm not sure it's as great as everyone thinks it is, but to each their own. I wish Hurricane form's face design was less triangular. I do like the whole flashy jewel bit. Fire = Ruby, Water = Sapphire, Land = Topaz(or w/e the yellow one is called) and Hurricane = Emerald. I wonder if that goes any deeper. |

On a side note, even though there's a lot of greek myth themes here, magical rings are uncommon in greek myth. Wizard may end up being a mesh up of European magic themes, but it's to early to tell. |
I actually caught the Greek references.
However, unlike the Zodiarts, I'm thinking the Greek thing is just a design choice as opposed to an actual theme. |

Right now, I'm just thinking they're going with random fantasy characters (Right now, the only actual standout character is Medusa. The rest, Phoenix, unicorn, minotaur, are all just par for the course in terms of fantasy creatures/characters).

Where does "Shabadoobie" fall under in Greek mythology?

...thank you, Zeus... |
I noticed the mythology theme they were going for but not that is was mostly/all Greek, that's interesting.

Except, of course, that the Kraken is from Scandinavian mythology, not Greek (despite what certain films would have you believe). There's definitely a lot of borrowing from Western mythology, but I'd say it's more 'Popular' than intentionally Greek.
