[WIP] Custom Kyoryuger Power Morpher Coin
I've got a legacy morpher on the way (white/green) and a custom morpher display case with slots for 5 coins. The legacy morpher only comes with 2 (white and green), so that leaves 4 slots.
I've also got a 3D printer, so I figured why not make my own coins? Then I figured, why make the normal coins? Why not make custom ones? So, I decided to start with Kyoryuger, given they're current and also my favorite to date. After a failed attempt and some tweaking of the digital file, I managed to get a decent print: http://i.imgur.com/IF75BPO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/VBvNgKI.jpg http://i.imgur.com/j2m22u2.jpg http://i.imgur.com/AO0ybor.jpg http://i.imgur.com/jwIPg4r.jpg Typically these need to cure in the sun, but it's winter here and the sun has been hiding behind clouds. Since this is only a rough first shot, I figured I'd be OK going half-cured and removed it from its supports and tried some paint on the discarded base: http://i.imgur.com/DPthlJ0.jpg http://i.imgur.com/FxlWzhd.jpg Once it cures a tad bit more, I'll try to paint the actual coin gold (considering doing some black on the inside walls of the logo for depth, but... meh a lot of work for a "prototype"). I'm also working on quotes to have it electroplated with copper/bronze to give it a realistic look (and some heft). I'll post pics after I paint. |
Can't wait to see it painted!

Must be nice to have access to a 3D printer

So, the sun came out (as it was setting) so I propped the guy up in a window to soak up some UV to finish hardening (the logo was still a bit soft) http://i.imgur.com/QvV3dy0.jpg http://i.imgur.com/e900rVM.jpg Once hardened, I took some 220 grit sand paper and sanded away the marks from the supports and any unsmooth surfaces. Bathed it in some alcohol and let it air dry http://i.imgur.com/QZYCfjR.jpg http://i.imgur.com/d3QWAIZ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/eg8M6lY.jpg In the light I can still see some rough bits, but it'll have to do Quote:

First coat is down, and on the back, it's immediately clear the spaces I missed both on sanding and filling. I think that I'll use some opaque resin in the future so that it's easy to spot these things :(

Although I did an extremely rushed job on the second coat (intentional since it was about seeing the paint vs making it look good), I'm much more happy with the gold paint I used this time around:
http://i.imgur.com/FVt7TM5l.jpg A second batch of coins just came out the printer at a higher resolution (so print time was damn near 12 hours ) so they should be much smoother (less need for sanding) and look better after paint. Just in time for my morpher! |
