The Alien Rangers Saga
Recently I've been rewatching the final episodes of 3rd season of MMPR but there's something I've always wondered about this era of the show.
Why spend 3 seasons (with summer breaks) building up these characters only to shaft their well-loved actors out of the spot light for ten episodes at the end of MMPRs run? Weird choice. Kind of makes you wondered whether something serious was going on behind the scenes that forced Saban and Levi's decision to cut them and come back fresh in Zeo. We all know about David Yost's problems with the show, and how the actors always seemed to be holding out for a pay rise in line with JDF, right? It's also said that the show was in a bad way financially at that point and only really holding out on volume of toy sales. Then there's the whole Brad Hawkings thing. But again, if you want to consolidate a show and make sure it doesn't get cancelled then why oust your actors at a critical moment? Admittedly for only a week or so but still... risky or what! |
First, I'm a MMPR Fanboy. And even I struggle to call what Alien Rangers was a Saga :lol
Secondly, yes. I believe, and I could be wrong, that because of behind the scene problems going on they changed the cast up. David Yost not becoming Gold is one of those. |
Yeah, not sure what happened there. Even as a kid I was all WTF? It really killed a lot of momentum for me honestly. More recently, I thought it was something necessary to fulfill the contract obligations by using more footage, but still..

One thing no one seems to mention about the Alien Rangers is that they have this huuuge discrepancy between their morphed and unmorphed personalities than . Like their usually stoic awkward, occasionally playful fish people...but once they morph theyre these cocky show-offs who do tricks and pose in front of a crowd when fighting.

That discrepancy has always been around though. In fact I think seasons 2 and 3 are the only tines in ranger history when the suit actors are more in line with the charecters if only because its american exclusive footage

I'm honestly starting to believe that that group of episodes was a way for the exec. producers to gain leverage over the cast. OR the other way around, eg. Cast: "We aren't working anymore if you don't respect us." Saban: "Alright then, have a few weeks break and I'll get some kids in to do your jobs for you." It's baffling. I guess it's one of those behind the scenes stories in the fandom that'll never really come to light (like who they REALLY wanted to reveal the Phantom Ranger to be). |

I mean yeah, there are some where the difference is incredibly notable, but if I remember correctly, there was some original footage of the Alien Rangers fighting in front of a US crowd beating Tengas and occasionally striking a pose for the crowd and other weird stuff. I dunno, it's just kinda weird to me. |
I just recently watched Alien Rangers on Netflix and honestly I thought it was horrible.. Really that season started going downhill when Kimberly left.. Zeo however picked up a LOT..
