DX Compatible Gashapon and SG Ressha (lots of pics)
 

So, like some other folks, I really liked the special Ressha that were coming out via magazines, events and such, but disliked that they weren't DX compatible.

I figured there had to be a way, so I took apart a Gashapon ressha and decided to try to design a connector port for it.

After getting a nice fit on a male connector, I went to work trying to get it to work inside an actual ressha.

Yellow Gashapon out the way, I thought I'd try on something a bit more unique, and since the SG Sentai Ressha don't exist in DX form at all, perfect!

...except the innards were different and I had to redesign the port.

On the plus side, it allowed for a much tighter fit. I didn't even need to use glue this time around, though I did make the opening a bit too large (so you can see some gap at the back).

Clear Fire Ressha

This guy was a bit of a bitch because of how complicated the internals are. Kicked its ass in the end though, and decided to paint the connector black instead of red (since it's barely visible through the plastic)

Sadly, the metallic and normal don't look too different from each other at first glance.

That clear fire reshha looks great, it should've been combinable to start with.

Agreed, it's really not hard to do. If I can in a couple hours, it could have been like that from the factory.

What did you use to make the female connector port?

They're 3d printed. I measured a real one then modeled it in 123D
