Robot Jox
As anyone else seen this movie? I remember watching it when I was fourteen or fifteen and we had HBO. The basic premise is a little like G Gundam, but without magic powers. Five years after a Nuclear War the countries who survived, who merged into two super-counties (Basically one was American and the other was the Soviet Union) forbid war. So they create the Robot Jox. Gladiator styled combat between two giant Mecha.
It starred Gary Graham (Alien Nation) as the Western Market pilot, a man who couldn't read. So his Mechanic, who was Japanese, made origami for what each switch did. It wasn't a bad B-Movie. The Stop-Motion/CG for the Mechs wasn't horrible, the Western Market's mech could sit down into a kind-of tank mode. (Imagine the original megazord, but without dinosaurs) And both could somehow fly into space. And I remember the Soviet's mech was a spidertaur like design. With Pacific Rim coming out next year, this movie kept creeping into my mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUxDmKFCD2o As a bonus, there's our hero versus his Russian rival. |
Before I forget: Ignore the sequal. It had nothing to do with the original, it was about tourists being trapped and meh.

There are three films in the (loose) series: Robot Jox, Crash & Burn, and Robot Wars.
All of them were produced by Charles Band and released by his Full Moon Entertainment outfit -- the same guy who did the Puppet Master movies, the Subspecies movies, Trancers, Dollman, Demonic Toys, etc. Of the three, I actually liked Crash & Burn, although it has been a solid decade-plus since I watched it. Robot Wars is pretty awful, but Robot Jox was a lot of fun in a low rent, DTV sort of way. Which is appropriate as Band specialized in low rent, DTV movies. The stop motion effects were good but obviously limited, much like in the first Puppet Master, they ate up much of the budget. Worth watching if you can catch it, fersure. |

Robot Jox is one of those rare DTV gems, yes. |
I rented this movie back when Brady's was still in business. I didn't really pay attention to the plot but I did like the robot designs.
I might see this movie again someday if I can find it again. |

No idea what this is, but I'm assuming that this is American if Charlie Band is involved?
