Is it really all that ridiculous compared to a lot of other Tokusatsu backstories?

Actually yes IMO.

Personally, I think the backstory to Blade is a bit crazier.

Hair gel is a staple of anime and live action humor. The pompadour is quite common alongside others.

TBH, the real surprise here is that this hasn't already happened as an anime or comedic live show.

Now that you mentioned it, considering I read/watched Shaman King, and one of the main characters had one...

The lead in Fourze had a style of one too iirc. And it's also a common trope in other school based stories.

I'd be lying if I said this wasn't kind of an optimal response to the concept!
