It doesn't even have to be japan exclusive, ultimately the ones that connected the word with japanese shows were us, the western audience.

If you look at the depictions of an otaku in Japanese media, it is almost identical to the American depictions of nerds and geeks. They are basically interchange terms, except outside of Japan otaku is probably being use to point out that the person has interest is Japanese things.

The term you guys are thinking of that would match redneck is weeaboo.

PS This does give one the image of Akiba Red meeting Sheldon Cooper.

Get your facts straight. The definition of the word "otaku" has greatly changed over the years.
These days, being an "otaku" means being an expert on what you're interested in, though it still has a somewhat obsessive undertone. AbareYellow even calls herself an "otaku" in Dekaranger vs. Abaranger.
Being "otaku" is not a bad thing anymore these days.

Exactly. Look at me- Country Music, Duck Dynasty, Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Anime, Manga, The Big Bang Theory, Power Rangers, My Little Pony, and Gundam otaku. Completely diverse there but I love and do what I want to.

Isn't every but an otaku for something? I mean, there's people who are really into sports or cooking or whatever. They don't call themselves nerd or otaku, but in some way, they are exactly that, aren't they?

Yes they are. Its like the guys who play fantasy football but dont play. They are sports geeks/nerds. If you love everything about cars, youre a car fan. Its simple.
