Vis ? vis Trigger, I?ve always felt that it kind of set a very high bar for itself by being both a loose remake of one of the most beloved series in the franchise and having to be the show that?s followed Z. It had some neat ideas, but got too caught up in trying to follow the premise of that one Tiga movie and leaning way too hard on a shallow catchphrase protagonist.
Trigger was really just so entirely underwhelming, such a disappointment. |

Also the support cast sucked royally. That one lady who screamed "Falcon-chan" all the time and the muscle guy had no character development whatsoever. We only got small tidbits during that one episode were everyone is asleep and dreaming of achieving their goals or whatever which was basically nothing.

From what the production notes, that does kinda seem to be what happened.

There's a Kaiju Corpse and a girl in a world that has never before faced or recognized Kaiju even as a concept...and so of course yet ANOTHER one has shown up in Japan!
The OP is a pretty classic and rockin' Ultraman OP! Bonus points for fitting in the title cards like a Showa Ultra OP! And we've got Sorato, Kosei, Ayumu...and of course, the Meteor Kaiju and Omega's armored forms! I'm guessing all those emblems flying into the screen are the Meteor Kaiju and Omega? Omega is the man of the hour but right now he wants to devour magazines like Kaminaga devoured books and basically freeload off Kosei and his food. Because yes, they are totally roommates now. And this isn't the kind of Ultra show where Kosei can just turn in an alien and expect people to believe him, so he's stuck with Omega and getting dragged to spots with active Kaiju situations. What's an Ultra Host to do if they're not part of an officially sanctioned Attack Team who has permission to visit Kaiju locations? Why just jump around an official blockade of course! Omega taking Kosei into the sky is becoming their thing. I think Omega might have the biggest appetite of any Ultra I've seen. Granted it seems like he gets tired/exhausted from using his powers so he needs the fuel. Ayumu is a cute fledgling biologist who finds herself in the unenviable task of having to handle this outbreak of Kaiju that no one understands, not even herself, but she's a very dedicated person so she's putting her all into it. She's even nice enough to let Omega have her lunch, even as he complains about it. Thank goodness Omega, no SORATO, has Kosei because he probably couldn't maintain a secret identity to save his life. Kosei comes up with his human name on the spot, comes up with a cover story, and even makes Sorato maintain his cover or else he won't get his precious food! Dugrid, the Poison Lizard! What he lacks in arm length he makes up for in his big mouth and poison toxins he spews from his back! They can even be used to launch a headbutt! I like how Omega's transformation is kind of a mix of Ultraseven and traditional Ultraman...we see Sorato's body morph into Omega, but he still gets the traditional Rise sequence. It was nice to see Omega fighting for Ayumu's sake because she worked so hard, and she even gives him the idea for how to weaken Dugrid. Also, classic tail throw! Love it! If the Omega Slugger is a bad idea because Dugrid is made up of toxins, Omega has got to finish this with his Ultra Beam. But did the Color Timer...basically tell him to do it or reminds him he could? Was it his body remembering? First fly off of the season! We even see his chest logo for a bit when he really flies off! Well, Ayumu finally got acknowledgement for her efforts and got two new "younger" brothers she never asked for...but they do make life more entertaining! MindRayn ED. What more can you say other than it's awesome? And also sounds like it's partially the world as seen through Omega's eyes. Next week: Weather condition Kaiju problems and the first Meteor Kaiju! |

Looks like episode 2 has proven to me that the banter between the fish out of water with memory loss that is Sorato/Omega and Kosei will be why I enjoy this show.

I really do appreciate how this show gets to reevaluate a lot of basic Ultraman tropes since this isn't a setting where anyone knows anything about aliens or monsters. A beam attack hasn't been that hype in a long time simply because no one in the story even knew Omega could do that. We also don't have a defense team because obviously nobody was prepared for this, as seen with Ayu getting pulled from her normal field to examine kaiju. Kosei seems unsure what to do with Omega basically forcibly moving in with him, but realizes during the episode that he can't just hand a confused alien to the authorities and starts actively trying to get Sorato to keep up a secret identity. It's an uphill struggle to say the least! The chemistry between the characters is just super charming in this one, I guess the director brought some of that good R/B energy to the show!

Yeah I'm gonna have lots of fun with Omega. I adore the main trio of characters, their quirks and the resulting chemistry they have with each other, and on top of that the effects are excellent and the action really cool to watch.
I enjoy how the world setting makes everything feel fresh, even something as classic a beam finisher feels all new and exciting. |

I just got my copy of Ultraman Z on Blu-Ray from Amazon today, along with Unearthed Classics release version of the first live-action Guyver movie and the Ultraman Orb Origin Saga miniseries on DVD and Blu-Ray respectively, and I am seriously forward looking to revisiting the series in both languages especially the English dub.

Sorato's kind of like a Digimon. He needs lots of food for energy.
Yep. I'm loving this duo and the show as a whole so far. Enjoying the opening and its visuals with the classic silhouettes and can't wait to see the Meteor Kaiju forms in action, plus the ending was great as well. And boy did they hype up that beam attack (again giving me Blazar flashbacks), really sold it to me here. It's nice to see them reinvent themselves every now and again, plus having a new fight backdrop, even if it's not much, a change of scenery spices up things a long way. Next Episode: When Penguins Fly!
