See I just can't get past the terrible american acting anymore. When I was a kid I obviously didn't care. But now? I just can't stomach it when compared to the original Japanese version. MMPR would probably be the only series I'd enjoy more than it's source and that's only because Zyuranger (from what I understand) is rather boring.
Also I'd have to say RPM Vs. Go-Onger isn't a fair comparison since RPM went a completely different direction. The only similarities they had were costumes by the end of it.

I started watching Hurricanger last night just for fun. Now that I'm going through it for my second time through, it's actually kinda of nice to now be able to look at it and to a degree analyze it knowing what's going to happen, where as before I didn't know jack outside of the Gouraigers story.

With Gold, Swan, and Bright? No. DekaSwan shoed up again in Gokaiger, but Bright and Gold were just one-shots.

I am now watching Gokaiger on Youtube just for the heck of it and out of boredom. I'm really enjoying the series so far and I'm just starting on its fourth episode.

And with that, Dekaranger is done. While I still have the movie and Vs. Abaranger to watch, I'll get to them a bit later.
I must say, it's certainly a fun series. The characters were great and it did well to capture the feel that these are cops working to save humanity, not superheroes who do it as a side job. There we some fundamental flaws, notably the execution of criminals vs. imprisonment (And no, I'm not starting this moral debate, don't worry. I'm just saying that it's a flaw against the series). Other issues are the characterization of our cast. They do grow, but it's pretty minute. Hoji's episode was one of the best episodes in Sentai, but ultimately, he had no actual change or growth occur from it, thus, technically, making it filler. It's amazingly written and emotional, but filler nonetheless. The show wanted to stick so closely to status quo that they didn't want the characters to experience any form of shift, which was a problem. As for the villains, I'm not a fan. There was a monster of the week here or there that had a neat backstory and history, but they were all just bland, for the most part. I also noticed that they had an odd tendency to add on crimes to make you lose any sense of sympathy for the character getting executed. It's rather jarring for a character who was solely a thief throughout the episode to have two hundred murders under his belt revealed during Judgment Time. Abrella was interesting, but ultimately, he wasn't any different. Who was originally a weapons smuggler who was angry over the Dekarangers foiling his transactions, was then revealed to be a mass murder across galaxies, and his endgame plan was to basically make Earth a hive of scum and villainy, turning him from a new concept back to the same tired space conqueror type villain. He didn't have a death ship, but his plan was that he'd be at the top to make all the money. His concept was different, but his goals pretty much put him on the same stage as SPD's Grumm. Speaking of SPD, the inevitable comparison comes, "Which was better?" Den-O says that compared to Deka, SPD is "Literally nothing." He is wrong. Deka is good, and I'll say that it's better than SPD, but the moral flaws of Dekaranger leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not just the execution of the MOTW, but the crimes the monsters committed as well, having mass murder lists that would make <Insert murderer's name here> blush. I know I'm thinking too deeply, and they're ultimately just numbers to make the monsters seem more evil so you don't have any doubt in your mind that they're horrible people (Aliens), but for each number, there's one family member we don't see. There's one planet that's completely gone, because of these characters. It's an effective way to prove to the viewer that there is no redeeming these characters, but it's a deplorable way of doing so.

If I can include series that I haven't finished, but I'm watching as it's subbed, then after Kakuranger. Geki (Kaku) Deka Gosei (Kyoryu) (Shinken) (Bouken) Gokai (Sun Vulcan) *Series in parenthesis are unfinished and subject to change.

Well I watched episodes 9-16 of Jetman a little while ago. First off, let me get this out of the way, what the **** is up with the sobo noodles episode? I already knew it was coming, but this episode is one of the worst episodes in the entire history of Sentai. There have been bad episodes, bad moments, bad series, but this episode is right up there with the Live Green pregnancy episode in my "WTF Were They Thinking?" category. If I show this series to my friends I will definitely not ever let them watch this or they may never want to watch another episode of Jetman after it.
With that out of the way, the two parter with Camera Dimension were down right awesome. This is a very rare occasion to have a series where a character just comes out and says they love another character to that person. Forget the epic lunch Kaoru and Kouga plan to have after the Garo movie, this is something truly unexpected from a Japanese show. However, am I the only one that finds it weird that they are celebrating Ryu's 26th birthday when a few episodes prior Ryu's grandma said he was 27? That just strikes me as odd. Did GUIS mess up their translation in one of these episodes? Anyway, the episode where Ako's friend finds out she is a ranger was really good too. The episode after, with the paper monster, was average, especially given the last several episodes prior to it. I also did like the episode with the killer bus that came before the two parter. Grey is a pretty cool villain and becoming my favorite of the bunch. Overall, Jetman is pretty good, but I still cannot see how people think it is the greatest series ever. Yeah, some people said that to me about DaiRanger, but still. Jetman is good, but I'd say it is equal to ZyuRanger. |
