That was not segmented.
That was not full of forced cameos. That was not a convoluted mess. Am I in the right universe? It feels wrong to see a modern Toei toku movie that doesn't make my head hurt with rage. For a little bit, I thought I was watching something made by Garo's team. A lot of unmorphed fights and and character drama. It's a predictable movie, but in a good way. The action was very good and, again, a lot of unmorphed fights. Kenji Ohba is still all kinds of awesome. He even manages not the steal the show, which he could've done easily. Except Kenji Ohba is better because he doesn't have an ego the size of Texas ![]() |

It didn't wow me or anything but it was enjoyable. The Shaider and Sharivan cameos were nice but almost pointless considering how little they were used. The bike racing at the beginning seemed a bit pointless but thankfully was short. Brighton had a great costume but as other have said it was easily predictable who he was. And maybe I'm the only one who didn't like this but the un-transformed fights went on for way too long. We only got maybe 2 good jouchakus out of Geki, the rest were like a mid air jump kinda of deal. It's a Gavan movie I'd like to see the costume more than a couple of times I guess.

Like most my only exposure to Gavan is through Gokaiger and Go-Buster, and since the latter team-up didn't impress me all that much I didn't quite know what to expect going into this. However I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed it, I love the more sci-fi edge the Metal Heroes seem to have and I'd definitely be down for a new series.
That being said, the movie wasn't perfect. Much like Den said Gavan didn't actually appear all that much, and what he did appear for Type-G spent a lot of that time getting his ass kicked. Wish we could have seen more of Sharivan and Shaider too - if a new series does come I'd love it to be in the form of arcs/one-shots focussing on single characters. On a final note, Kenji Ohba is a legend, and I'm probably going to need that Type-G figuart after all ![]()

Even though I wasn't too familiar with Gavan before the Gokaiger crossover,I have loved Kenji Ohba since he showed up in the Goseiger crossover as DenjiBlue. He just brings this great presence to every role he's in.Even if you don't know who he is,you see him once and you're just immediately drawn to him.He fails to disappoint here,if this is how Retsu was like in the original series then point me to the nearest subgroup immediately.Anytime there's an angsty character in anything, bust out Kenji Ohba to knock some MAN into 'em
![]() As for Geki,I like him.His character growth from being the rookie Space Sheriff to eventually becoming the official Gavan is believable. No one can be Kenji Ohba,so they're not gonna get the hero thing immediately. So they need someone like Ohba to bring out the MAN in everyone. Sharivan and Shaider,I was really disappointed we didn't get to see more of them.If they're gonna have such a small role anyway, you might as well have said they were off upholding justice elsewhere.I love Shaider's actor and I really wanted to see how he portrayed a character that wasn't Date/Birth.And since I'm doing LWW for Gekiranger,I'm not gonna have experience with Sharivan's actor for a while. Overall, this movie really made me want to see more Gavan, old and new.I hope that this movie did well enough to warrant a new show. The more tokusatsu out there to watch every week, the better. It's not an amazing movie. The pacing is kinda bad and they really rushed into the climax.I figured out Brighton was Touya as soon as his first appearance.Otherwise,a great intro for people interested in some Gavan and some Kenji Ohba. ![]() |

Watched this earlier today. The first 40 or so minutes were BAD. WAY too much exposition and stuff in it. Too be perfectly honest, as someone who's new to Metal Heroes (Only seen Gavan in Gokaiger vs Gavan and in Go-Busters (Well, Type-G. Not the cool Gavan.
![]() The only really interesting part of the first half, other then the sheer amount of times Geki gets his ass kicked, was this: ![]() ![]() What in the hell is Shelly wearing? Is it a thing in Japan to wear dresses that make you look fat? Anyways, the movie really picks up when Kenji Ohba shows up in his SUV: ![]() After Ohba shows up, the movie actually becomes FUN and INTERESTING. The climax in Makuu Space was cool, though the Shaider and Sharivan cameos, while cool, were really unneeded in the grand scheme of things and just Toei overloading the movie again. The reveal that Toya is the main villain was so expected that I wonder why I even bother spoiler-tagging it. Other than the overloaded first half, it was pretty good, but I'm not surprised it flopped. Especially when they advertised it in Go-Busters: the awesome Sentai that nobody in Japan watched. |

Kenji Gavan's SUV was hilarious
![]() Like others have said (myself included) the Shaider and Sharivan cameos were so minor that pretty much any actor could have played them at all. Using Proto-Birth and Geki Violet is awesome.... but when they barely have screen time what's the point of have 2 good actors like that?

I found this movie to be extremely subpar and was extremely disappointed with it. First off, the characters of this movie were so lackluster. I could not give a damn what happened to Geki and would have rather he died. His character was way too whiny, far too weak, and unlikable. Not to mention his acting could make Shia Lebeouf look good. Then you had Shelly, who has to have the most ridiculous costume I have seen from a Toku show in a long time. I don't care if that is how the partners looked in the 80s, this is 2013, it is time to keep some things in the time period they came from. Next was how pointless Shaider and Sharivan were. They served absolutely nothing to the story and we did not even get to watch them actually fight.
Next up, the plot. The Japanese need to learn how to write some new ****ing plot twists!! I am sick to death of this whole, "We think he is dead but he is really the villain" plot. It is bull**** and something the Japanese do way too much these days. That plot is exactly why Fullmetal Alchemist The Sacred Stars of Milos is nothing but utter ****! They do it in every freaking thing whether it be movies, anime, toku, or video games and I am tired of it. They need to either have their writers start reading books or get new writers. The moment I saw Geki and Touya walking in the space suits that one of them was going to "die" and become the villain of the movie, just because it was that predictable. Third, the CGI in this movie was down right awful, like 1998 Playstation awful. I know Toei doesn't have the budget of a Hollywood movie, but they could have at least made it look like they were trying. And what was up with the armada of enemy ships that just appeared out of nowhere? It seemed forced in and out of the blue. When did the enemy have those ships? On the positive side, every scene with the original Gavan was excellent. In fact, he vastly over shadowed Geki, making Geki entirely useless. What was the point of Geki? The movie would have been perfectly fine with just Gavan. He outshined Geki on every level. I want a new movie with him and just him, not Geki. Also, the stuff in the Makaa Space were excellent and great. I loved how well done that was and wished it had been longer. In fact, I wished they had actually fought in there instead of just running away from battle the entire time. Overall, this movie was bad, Super Hero Taisen levels of bad, maybe even worse. They took what should have been an incredible movie and wasted it on pointless boring banter of information we did not need to know, on what we did not care about, and what we figured out in the first two minutes of the movie. I give this movie a 2/5 and that 2 is only because of the original Gavan. While I am glad to have seen it, it is definitely not a movie I can see myself ever revisiting. Next time, they should just do a 13 episode series instead because that is what this felt like. Thirteen episodes crammed into a 90 minute plot. Last edited by Dr Kain; 03-16-2013 at 10:24 PM.. |
