Well, here we go again, hopefully this thread goes better than last time, but without further ado...
In our second installment of the PR vs SS series we take a look at "Gosei Sentai Dairanger", a favourite among Sentai fans & the Second season of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers", which is most famous for introducing a villain know for scaring kids everywhere, Lord Zedd. Dairanger "Five descendants of the Dai tribe, one of three ancient tribes of the power Daos Empire are chosen to fight against the Gorma who continue in the war between the Dai and Gorma tribes. With their high levels of chi, they are aided by the Mythical Chi Beasts. Little do they know the secrets that are kept will unravel during their journey." MMPR (Season 2) "After failing to defeat the Power Rangers time & time again, Lord Zedd takes Rita's place & leads a new campaign of evil against the Power Rangers & the Earth. In order to defend Angel Grove against Lord Zedd's attacks, the Power Rangers need to upgrade their Dinozords into the mighty Thunderzords! The fight against evil rages on!" Is Dairanger good enough to beat the Nostalgia factor of Mighty Morphin? Let's find out! |

This is a tough one
Dairanger had a fantastic aesthetic and storyline, but at the same time I found a lot of the characters to be somewhat forgettable. Daigo, Kou and to some extent Ryu were the only ones I really cared about. MMPR season 2 on the other hand is what solidified my love for Power Rangers - I preferred the Thunderzords to the Dinozords, the White ranger was my childhood hero and Lord Zedd was a better villain than Rita. You know what? I'm gonna vote MMPR season 2.

This is not even a contest, this is a massacre. DaiRanger. It is hands down the best Sentai series ever. It is one of the few series where I liked every ranger to the team, it has the coolest yellow ranger ever, it is all based on mythology, and it really does not have that many Monster of the Week monsters. In fact, there are only 25 weekly monsters, as the rest are main soldiers, and that includes the Three Sisters from Hell as three normal monsters. The series is very story driven and full of subplots with deep characters you don't normally see in a Sentai series outside of the rangers. The Gorma villians were awesome, as outside of the 3 Bakas, I did not hate any of them. Plus, Jin is the most badass villian in Sentai history.
MMPR Season 2 was a great season, it gave us Lord Zedd, who is my favorite Power Rangers villians of all time, but the show had some really terrible moments. The way they handled the departure of the three was insulting because you could tell those were not their voices (even as a kid, I knew something was wrong), the whole Zedd and Rita marriage thing felt forced, and the whole Serpenterra battery thing got annoying after a while. It did have some great moments though, like the awkward "Zyu2" footage monsters were pretty cool looking (love the Robogoat episode), and it did introduce me to my favorite mecha designs, which is what helped fuel my desire to see DaiRanger after I got into Sentai in 2003, but man was the mech footage poorly edited together. The show also gave us three new rangers, and only one of them was really worth anything, the other two were just there. So all in all, Season 2 was a mixed bag, but for the most part, it was pretty strong, but then it went out on a whimper. If I recall, the last episode of the season was the clone Billy one, and that was a boring finale. |

Since Dairanger is one of my favorite sentai series, there's no contest in my mind.

Dairanger is okay, but forgetable. So forgetable that I think the show forgot it's own plot. There's a lot of wasted potential. There's only about 4 or so episodes worth watching and they're almost all in the first 3rd of the show. The top of that list barely has the Dairangers in it (episode 14, where Yufang fights the monster of the day himself and does a damn good job at it).
MMPR Season 2 had all kinds of things going on. The final Green Ranger episodes, White Ranger being revealed, changing heros and villains, Lord Zedd when he was still badass, marriage, and some really good silly campy episodes. I'm not sure that's all good, but it's sure not forgetable! PS Daizinryu was a waste of time in Dairanger. Serpentera fairs better and that includes being destoryed by a motorcycle. What episodes did you like then?
Some of what you are saying sounds more like trolling just to start a flame war. What exactly did not you like in DaiRanger? What did you think of teh story arcs? Ryo's dad? Kaku's revelation? The truth behind Gorma? |
