Did you notice at the beginning, when they're showing off the dual-pilot thing, one side is green and the other purple/black? Someone else mentioned that before I saw it, but it might be intentional. Would not be surprised if del Toro likes Kamen Rider.

Just saw it earlier this afternoon and my thoughts are almost nothing but positive. The only real "problem" with the film and this could have just been my theater, is that the narration at the beginning and quite a bit of the dialogue throughout was inaudible. It's someone turned the vocals down and everything else up.
The movie itself however? Brilliant. Del Toro and his team have crafted an incredible universe for these characters to inhabit. It really feels like the ultimate nitty gritty version of Gundam/Eva/Macross/Sentai/Other mecha shows grounded into a harsh reality. The technology is strong but archaic compared to what we've come to expect from our usual mechanized heroes, which makes it all the more believable. The bit about the dinosaurs having been even more primitive Kaiju was a stroke of awesome as well. Showing us that our world has been visited in this way more than once, now it's just more easily inhabitable. The creatures/aliens in the other universe/dimension were measly when compared to the beasts they could create but often times those with great power to wield have none of their own. The Kaiju were a bit generic but they served their purpose well. The characters mostly sold me as well. Mako, Raleigh, and Stacker for sure. While the Aussie team felt to be forced stereotypes I did love the Striker Eureka and their dog mascot ![]() Miss Kikuchi's performance was probably my favorite. It was fantastic to see an actual native Japanese speaker play a major role in a summer blockbuster type film. And it's always great to see more strong female leads. She did a great job of selling me on Mako, especially with the ties to Stacker that she had as a child. Overall I have to say that the movie totally sold me on it's premise and characters. I know that it's $40 million opening weekend may leave the sequel in question but I'd love to see another film. Though after detonating the Danger on the other side I really don't see where it could go from here as far as sequels go. Though they could set it further in the future. That means that even though we saw an explosion on their side of the rift,A.We didn't see how much damage it caused, just that it closed the rift and B.They have the ability to open/create rifts when and wherever they want.

I saw the movie in IMAX 3D and it was amazing. I know a lot of people hate 3D but for a large scale movie like this, you need to do it justice and see it like this. The 3D was so well done for the visual style it aimed for, even during the talking scenes it added a bit.
I love the Jeager designs a lot and the art style of the Kaiju. Its not like Transformers where they are trying to make Optimus Prime look as real as possible and falls into the uncanny valley for a lot of people. It is clear cut, colorful and well shot. Granted the sword thing was stupid but they could have explained the non use of the sword as it was a prototype that was being developed. The two pilot thing didn't bother me as well as the intro. I didn't mind Charlie Day as the scientist, probably since I've seen only a handful of parts of episodes of Its always Sunny. Mako was pretty cool but is it just me or when we first see her, she's super quiet and accent kinda made her hard to hear? Overall, I liked the movie sure people say it has shallow characters and the sword plothole but I liked the movie a lot. 8/10 Hope it gets a sequel or a prequel or anime or something. PS, this movie does not rip off Evangelion. Evangelion is about a whiny little bitch of a boy letting the world crumble around him. This is Kaiju punching action. I think the Japanese poster for this movie makes it sorta look like Evangelion with the way the Gipsy Danger looks in that art. |

They have plenty of room for sequels and prequels. For a prequel, they could follow Stacker and the Coyote Jaeger. For sequels, you just had to pay attention to the story. After he drifted for the first time with the kaiju brain,he told Stacker that they were the ones that eliminated the dinosaurs. They saw the planet was too clean and left. They then came back millions of years later after we polluted the Earth enough for them to find it suitable.
That means that even though we saw an explosion on their side of the rift,A.We didn't see how much damage it caused, just that it closed the rift and B.They have the ability to open/create rifts when and wherever they want. The nice thing about having such an old race of alien creatures is that for them time probably seems to pass by very quickly. In the millions of years between their attempted invasions of Earth did they develop new and stronger Kaiju? Probably, but since the atmosphere is what held them at bay in the past, they may not be significantly different in the present. They may not be as aware of the flow of time on our side of the rift either, time may flow differently on their side. Therefor you can reason that humanity, being driven to protect itself would develop fantastic new technologies in a span of time that crosses generations, while for the aliens it could only be a couple years difference perhaps. Even if they did develop stronger kaiju we can see that at the end of everything with hardly any resources, that a damaged Mark 3 and a lone Mark 5 can take on a Category 5, albeit with heavy cost and casualty. That being said, after millions of years of design and development on the alien side, 8 years were all humans needed to put up a fight. If my theory holds about time flowing differently, then after a mere 50 or even 100 years I doubt the invaders would have developed Kaiju strong enough to decimate the planet again. The Jaeger tech would have advanced exponentially since their first encounters, well beyond the alien bio-tech.

I'd like to see a prequel or 2 set in that 5 year period alluded to in the middle but we already know the end game of the first film so some suspense is taken out of the equation. What I'd really like to see is a sequel with the aliens possibly returning 50 or 100 years later when humanity has re-prepared for them. They think their new Kaiju will be strong enough but humanity has gone well beyond category 5 with Jaeger tech.

That being said,Mako knowing about the sword and Raleigh not is just a thing. She might have designed it into the redesigned Gipsy and Raleigh only knew about the old design. Also Mako could have hidden that memory from him, making the sword just for her because she was piloting for revenge. it would be ok,but the reason PR is so successful is because of setting. When I saw the alien world up on the screen, honestly it seemed bland.

I could see part of a sequel being a thing where the Jaegar research team has studied the DNA of the kaiju and started cloning their own, to be piloted using the drift. Like maybe a cyborg kaiju, with a mechanical section where the pilots are inside the rest of the monster. That way they could enter the rift and attack the aliens directly(at the end of the movie).
