More than the starters, I think Ash should try not to get the first basic Flying type he comes across. Perhaps be a bit more imaginative in his flying choice.

That'd be nice (How cool would it have been for Ash's Unova flyer to be Braviary or Mandibuzz?), but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Or Sigilyph for instance. When Ash gets weird Pokémon it makes for some interesting interactions.

Ash had a Glaile which is definitely not one of the Pokemon I'd expect from a main character, to say nothing of Muk, Kingler and his legion of Tauroses...Taurosi?

He didn't do much with the Tauros, but the rest were all awesome additions to his team.

Looking at the Pokemon he's had, Ash could easily build a champion team with the following:

1. Sceptile
2. Heracross
3. Krookodile
4. Gliscor
5. Totodile...Look I think its cute ok?
6. Snorlax

If he brought this team to any tournament and just benched Pikachu who could beat him!?

But...Pikachu...can damage Ground Pokémon with Electric attacks, create Thunder armor for Flying types and beat Dragonites.
