I don't aim for the "Best" really. I just try to catch a Pokemon with a Nature that doesn't screw them over, such as a Pikachu with a nature that reduces Speed, or a Scyther with a nature that reduces Attack.
Who knows, you might have just lucked out and not caught a broken Pokemon. It's possible

Third gym beaten, and after spending an hour or two in Amite I'm finally the owner of a Sylveon, currently working on level grinding Sylveon and Tyrunt so they're caught up with the rest my team.

I decided to play some more Pokemon Showdown in the Unrated Random tier and I was able to use Sigilyph. I'll tell you, it just swept through a majority of the enemy team. I think I'll use a Sigilyph for my Pokemon X team.
