So last year at my local anime convention I did a panel called The History of Super Sentai. It entailed talking about the history of the franchise, along with discussing a variety of items that influenced it and what it influenced (Power Rangers, Golion/Voltron, 5 colored Daleks, etc). It was a huge success and of course, I am doing it again.
However, I decided last night to submit a History of Kamen Rider panel as I am currently on a Kamen Rider kick, and I got a bug up my ass about doing one. Is there any important information I should know about Kamen Rider that is not well known out there? I know the original idea was based off Skull Man, but is there anything else important to its history? I plan on showing clips from the original series, the first fight between Black and Shadow Moon, the opening scene to Decade with all of the modern Riders, and then the scene from the All Riders vs Daishocker movie of the riders just walking together in a straight line. I also plan to end the panel (and the Sentai panel) with a "movie trailer" of a Kamen Rider vs Sentai 2013 panel. :-p Clip wise, I don't want to have more than 20-25 minutes of footage, but I think there is more I can add to what I mentioned above, as I think that is like 15 minutes in total. |

You should probably at least mention and briefly talk about the manga by Shotaro Ishinomori. The later mangas are less important because they weren't done by Ishinomori, really.
I would also at least talk briefly about Kamen Rider 1 and Kamen Rider 2 and the rationale behind that, and then the popularity of the show with both of them. Also, the Showa era movies!

That's a good idea. Do you have a site I can go to to read up on teh manga? I know nothing of it outside of that there was one.
You are referring to Kamen Rider 1 being injured on set, which is what created 2 right? Not sure about the popularity with them though. |

Should be importrant to mention that this series was what inspired Ishinomori to create Kamen Rider in the first place |

I already plan on that, but I just got rid of the DVD of the anime of Skull Man due to how awful it was. Ironic that 3 days later I decided to do a KR panel.

I have a CBR of the first few issues of the manga. I will see if I can find out where I found it.
And yeah, the injury of Hiroshi Fujioka caused the hasty creation of Kamen Rider 2, but the show actually ran for almost half of its entire run with both of them. I have heard it said that the idea that kids liked having more than one Kamen Rider is what lead to the direction of the series, with V3 being introduced not as a solo hero but as the third Kamen Rider, and so forth. Also, the regular teaming up of the Riders, which obviously continues to this day, goes back to this concept. Another element is that Kamen Rider basically took the 1990s off, save for the movies. It was the re-emergence of Ultraman with Tiga, (and Dyna) which served as a sort of "kick start" (pun intended) to get Kamen Rider back with Kuuga. A point might be made about the thematic and historical connections between the two series -- even though they are from different studios. I don't know if you want to touch on it, but you could talk about the two US adaptions of Kamen Rider shows.

I'm sure you can find clips of the series, if not the full thing on youtube. Worst comes to worst, you can always just DL the videos and show it from a computer or something.

Best Advice: Watch the Fox Kids Masked Rider series. Then Bleach your mind and forget it existed, suffer. Suffer like the rest of us.

I always found how the riders, especially modern ones (I assume most of the old ones follow this too?), get their abilities from the enemy. So OOO use medals that make up his enemies, W the enemies created Gaia memories, kiva has kivat which obviously originally belonged to king (well kivat's dad) etc, etc...
It's just a nice nod to the original how, rider 1 was supposed to be a warrior for shocker =] That and the gems on the helmet... Were they ever used for anything back in the day? |

Yep, I'm already going to mention the US adaptations. In fact, one of my friends is going to rip the opening song from Masked Rider off Youtube for me.
Yeah, that was a common theme. Look at Black. Kotaro was supposed to be an agent for Gorgom, but escaped. In fact, I think every Showa rider was a cyborg. |
