I don't know about you guys but I'm rather hoping that with the new movie coming out, we'll see re-prints of the previous films.
But what I'm REALLY hoping for is a wide US release of GODZILLA RETURNS/1985 on DVD or Blu Ray. After the fiasco with GODZILLA VS MEGALON, I think it's safe to say Tokyo Shock would rather not deal with Toho again. So who is the next likely prospect? Personally, I'm hoping for SHOUT FACTORY, seeing as they already have the GAMERA movies (mostly.) But, chances are we'll see a major studio buy the rights. Thoughts?

That would be swell, and as you mentioned, the timing is just too right. Possibly split into shōwa, heisei, and millennial box sets.

A Millenium boxed set is absolutely possible, close to all of Heisei is too, but Showa is currently split up between too many companies to be feasible.
Sony currently has rights to all the Millenium movies (which is why their DVDs have been available and cheap for so long) and everything Heisei but 1985 and Biollante. They let their Showa rights lapse, though, which is how you end up with the insane prices on Son of G, Sea Monster, Hedorah, Gigan, and Mechagodzilla. It would also be a perfect time to upgrade the Heisei DVDs from the terrible double-feature discs available for most of them - grabbing the rights to '85 and throwing them all together could work nicely for Sony if that's what they wanted.

Any Reissue that doesn't include Return of Godzilla is utterly pointless! Pretty much every other movie has been released to DVD, so if ROG/G1985 isn't done there is no point to any others.....

I would be completely down for a box set. While the Millennium movies don't really need it (You could probably find dual language DVDs for all of them for 5 bucks a pop), a Showa boxset would be a godsend.

I'd like it if Sony at least gave us the Millennium and Heisei movies on BD already!! As much as I love watching them raw on Toho's BDs, they leave a lot to be desired quality wise. If I have to put up with DVD quality video in 1080P, it would be nice to at least have subtitles to go with it. The only thing Toho's discs have going for them are the bonus features and 5.1 audio. OH yeah, and also having G2K subbed and on BD would be nice too so I don't have to keep using my region free DVD player).
As for the Showa stuff, Megalon and King Kong are the only movies I need (well, I have the R2 of King Kong, but a nice subtitled US release would be nice for a change for same reasons as G2K). |

Wouldn't remotely be pointless to anyone who missed out on the now-rare movies or becomes interested in owning the older Godzilla movies after watching Legendary's film.

True, but you'd have a bit of a trick with anything after 85, since before then Godzilla was all Happy and Cheerful, and in ROG here turned Heel and wrecked Tokyo again. It's just massively annoying that nearly all the Godzilla films (that I know of) are available on DVD, just not that one......

The only Godzilla movies to not be released on DVD in the US are King Kong vs Godzilla (the Jp version, not the edited apart US one) and either version of 84/85.
Oh, also the Heisei movies from KG-D were never released in Japanese. |

Good news for me, I guess, since King Kong vs is really low on the priority list...
But if a company doesn't renew their distribution rights for a movie, don't the rights revert back to Toho or something? What's preventing Sony (Who apparently has all the rights to the Millennium movies) from acquiring the Showa movies and releasing them (Aside from a possible lack of interest)?
