Just got my first badge a while ago and did the thing with the snorlax and the pokeflute... so not very far.

Neither was I... Until we were down to two pokemon each, yours of which was confused and the other a grass type.

Wanna Noibat? Those things are pretty good Pokemon but you only get near the end of the game and they're rare, i got a bunch of babies to trade.
