I honestly can't see how someone could not find Zangyack engaging sheerly through their entertainment and quirks. I know its all subjective, but I find the Zangyack incredibly entertaining, which is not something I'd be able to say about villains such as the Goumin or Warstar, therefore I think they succeed very well. When the villains inevitably were killed I was really sad to see them go, which is incredibly rare for a Sentai villain. And its not just me, the success of them is clear with the merchandise of them released alone, getting what I believe is the only villain-specific art book in the entire franchise and one of the very, very few Sentai villain Figuarts plus a statue.
And I can't fault a Toku villain for failing. I mean, come on, the entire genre is based on villains of the week coming down, being defeated and then replaced next episode. If you have a problem with that then you've got a problem with the entire genre. Even darker villains like the Vyram failed each and every episode. Sentai has plenty of crappy villain teams, but the Zangyack are definitely not among them. Last edited by Starscream Gaga; 04-12-2014 at 10:27 AM.. |

I gotta say, I LOVE that show. But even I can't find them terribly redeeming as villains. The Commanders they sent in each episode were mostly forgettable aside from the awesomeness that is Jealoushitto.
But Warz Gil was an oaf. Insarn I found particularly useless. Damaras was a fantastic design though he hung around too much in the background before breaking out his badassery. I actually really liked Barizorg and the resolution of that characters' arc with Joe. Akdos Gil, after Damaras, was the first to feel legitimately threatening. But overall? They're fairly forgettable bad guys. I don't think it detracts from the show though. Honestly I find a lot of Sentai villains to be mostly forgettable. But there are definitely winners out ther like the Negaztive Syndicate, Kenma, Orgs, Bandora Gang, Bouzack, etc

Well it appears for once that I'm with the general consensus, that the Zangyack are a crappy bunch of villains and characters. My favourite villains are dudes like Juuzo or Dereputa. Neither will change your life, but both get involved early on, achieve things and provide that 'shit got real factor' that is a surprisingly rare thing for sentai. If great, operatic, complex villains are always going to be out of sentai's reach, we should at least get villains who can throw our heroes through walls and provide a sense of threat.
The difference with the Zangyack is they have literally achieved nothing, they haven't even achieved anything temporarily. Yes every toku villain group is incompetent to a point, but they still get victories even if they are small. Basco has achieved more in like five appearances than the Zangyack have done in the thirty four episodes I've watched. And yes they've achieved a lot OFF SCREEN but their conquering of the universe may as well be functioning in an entirely separate spin off series, as their actual invasion of Earth is so pathetic and such a far cry from that it barely even lines up.

So what is the difference between the victories the Zangyack have made against the Warstar or Gedoushu? I can't think of any victories either made in their series outside of the final few episodes of their roles as adversaries, which exactly the same as the Zangyack, although their late victories are actually much more notable then Warstar and its fellow Goseiger Villain teams. Basco is Gokaiger's Juuzo, filling the role of an arch-nemesis to Red who is not directly affiliated with the main villain teams, so there's no need for the Zangyack to have one as well, too many "bad-ass" character is jut as bad as having none at all or over-using them leads to nothing but Villain Decay in a Tokusatsu show, which is why both Basco and Juuzo being used sparingly is so good.
And people have already explained that the failure of Warz Gill's invasion compared to the rest of the Zangyack is an actual plot point, not just a plot hole. Akudos Gill's fleet arrives later, which includes all the planet-destroying generals. But Dereputa? That's just an example of how subjective this topic is. I can barely remember him outside of his first two confrontations with Alata. |

Because I wasn't speaking for entire factions, I was speaking for standout characters and the point that there are none in this show for me. Even Basco, who I really WANT to like is in so few episodes I forget he exists until he suddenly reappears and rocks my world. I can't wait for that next wave of Zangyack then, I hope they hurry up as right now the villains are pure boredom.
Dereputa dies after those fights, so you remembered him just fine.

I can't help but disagree because I loved the Zangyack so much, but I definitely see where you're coming from and can understand why you have that opinion. I do personally think the Zangyack were more successful then the majority of Sentai villains because of how entertaining they were for me. I truly am not exaggerating when I say that they're my favourite group of villains in all the PR/SS I've watched.
I personally was not big on the second wave of Zangyack because I missed Warz Gill and thought Akudos Gill's lack of character beyond generic evil emperor was a big step back from his characterful son, but hopefully you enjoy the show more when they arrive. |

Gokaiger 35.
This episode proved how great a cowboy sentai could be, if it was ever done. It also made me want to watch Go-Onger, so I guess it succeeded as a tribute episode. So all in all, pretty good. Have either Go-Onger or Changeman been subbed? And are they any good?

I guess I'll give the first episode of Go-Onger a go and see how I find it.
