It's...I dunno. I liked it, but I fully realize that it's not a very well made series. It often lacks internal consistency, so they'll set up rules for any given aspect of the show and break them without addressing them, the characters are pretty damn bland, but I can't help enjoying it. Turboranger is a very "vanilla" series in that it's essentially bad guys vs good guys. There's a bit of a twist around episode 30 or so because this was also a Sentai series that ended up being retooled, but thanks to that you do get some cool arcs of episodes leading up to it.
I guess I mostly enjoy the atmosphere. It's said that after Liveman sorta bombed, Turboranger got the short end of the stick and has probably the smallest budget any Sentai has ever had. Because of those restrictions, the visuals can be pretty creative. It's the first time Sentai did more than just dip its toes into the realm of fantasy instead of super science and you get to see the directors and writers trying to adapt those various aspects to the franchise, so it's cool from a historical point of view. (though Zyuranger is the first full on fantasy Sentai, a lot of Turboranger is still science based) In the end, even though it's not a great series, I always got the impression everyone working on the show cared about it a lot and it spills over to me as a viewer for a surprisingly fun time. It's pretty much the same with Fiveman, these are shows that take place towards the end of the longest production staff run in Sentai, so there's this feeling that people are getting tired but still trying their best. These two shows are often overlooked as some of the most bland series in the entire franchise, but they have their merits. |

Thanks for your good honestly answer and rating on Turboranger it really gives me a clear view on Turboranger. After I read your post, I suddenly wanted to see the show for itselfXD
And even though it is not the best sentai out there and got the lowest budget any sentai ever had its history as you says, and still you like it. I am really hoping someday someone will take this show up and sub it ![]() |

All of the monsters in Boukenger are actually based on the mecha of all of the previous seasons, and all of the rangers were based on rangers from previous sentai series. Also at the end of the episodes after the ending songs, they do a recap/highlights of previous seasons, so it definitely was intentionally made as an anniversary series.
Ohranger was also originally planned to pay tribute to Super Sentai's roots and actually started off that way by having a serious tone akin to Gorenger. It even had Hiroshi Miyauchi, the original actor who portrayed Aorenger and Big One, as the mentor for the team, but the production staff felt obliged to rewrite the story mid-series to make it lighter and less serious due to a massive earthquake causing serious casualties in Japan.

Gokaiger was great because it was aware of its status and had fun with it. The previous anniversary shows were great in their own way but they have not been as direct about it like Gokaiger.

Gokaiger because the other seasons (in my opinion) barely acknowledged that they were anniversary series apart from the logo or a special or two. Gokaiger however, was all about the anniversary. I wonder what they'll do with the 40th.
