Just finished watching Sailor Moon Crystal episode 2.
Ugh, the animation has taken a pretty steep dive from episode 1. Usagi's magical disappearing pen while chatting to Ami in the library was notable, as was super fat pen and super small bun nurse Usagi and Luna's gigantic mouth during Mercury's transformation. A little sad, because looking pretty seems to be the main point of the series. As was the first episode it was the exact same as Chapter 2 of the manga almost word by word. So far I'm questioning why this series exists. Sailor Moon already got a fantastic adaptation in Anime form so why are they doing absolutely nothing to make this one special rather then put the manga straight on the screen? Seems incredibly pointless. Is it just a hugely expensive bit of fanwank/nostalgia bait? Ultimately episode was OK; its good having scenes, especially action scenes, done clearly so I can appreciate it for that. Mercury is still as useless as ever, but at least they slightly changed it so that she actually used an attack to create the mist. In the manga, it just appeared when she transformed. She literally just stood around doing nothing in her first manga transformation. Beryl's introduction was suprisingly dull and lifeless, which is a bit of a disappointment. I really disliked Rei's introduction in the manga, with weird stalker bisexual Usagi who acted like an alien when it comes to other people and Jadeite being unceremoniously killed off without doing absolutely anything, so I'm hoping here is when they start to move away from the source material. I'm assuming its going to happen somewhere, considering its 26 episodes and the manga Dark Kingdom arc was only 11 or so chapters long. I haven't seen any evidence Crystal will go beyond the Dark Kingdom and 26 chapters lands them straight at the middle-point of S rather then have any conclusion. I wholeheartedly agree, because I originally saw this as a reboot of the original anime. I really wish it was a reboot, rather than "Hey guys! It's more manga accurate than the original!" Why are so many companies making pointless reworks? Like, there's this, and Persona 4 Golden: The Animation. Granted this isn't as bad, since The original Sailor Moon anime came out in the 90s, whereas Persona 4: The Animation came out in 2012.
I also hope that you're right, and that they do move away from the manga more. I really wanted to see them do something new and different with this version.

That's correct they NEVER said that they were straying from the manga, plus A LOT of anime fans would rather have an anime that's closer to the manga adaption than something that's not following it at all, especially in this day & age .-.

yea the fact the straching out short chapters like mercury one with in episode filler is so that they can keep it close to manga. i dont mind in episode filler,so the fact that it done well or if the chapters too short i understand.

Episode 2 was amazing because it was 95% exactly like the manga. YES!!! This is the adaptation I have been waiting for. I love the original series, and I plan to get the BDs of it, but I finally am getting the manga in anime form. It is awesome. I also love the new transformation sequences as they are so gorgeous looking in CGI. My only issue is how bright blue everyone's eyes are. I really hope they don't stretch the Beryl arc out and that this season covers both Beryl and Diamond (Beryl is 14 chapters while Diamond is 12 chapters, equaling 26 chapters).

Second episode was a lot better than the first, and it was nice to see that the subs were a whole lot less stunted this time around too. My only complaint now is that the art looks so good, its really noticeable when the actual animation drops in quality (which I'm not surprised happens, given its Toei making it). I'm not talking errors like excess fingers or anything ridiculous like that, but droopy eyes and silly walks are really noticeable on something so high quality.
