And I think if they're chosen to be heroes they should be exceptional people from the get go, if you're going to choose five people to defend billions why pick a couple of Japanese school children who are not exceptional or special in any area. I agree with Dr Kain, watching the team grow as characters is half the fun of watching any show. Seeing relationships and abilities develop over the course of the show is fun.

Characters can grow without being inexperienced nobodies first. Kouga's character arc is my favourite in all of toku and he starts as the best of the best and goes from there.

I'm pretty sure Dekaranger, Gaoranger, and Gaoranger started out with their powers at the beginning of the series.

Kouga from which series?

I'm not saying every series they should be inexperienced nobodies, as that would get boring. At the same time, it would also get boring if every series started out with everyone experienced. Plus, it leaves the viewer bored if everyone is highly experienced as the viewer has no one to grow with. I think that was one of my problem with ToQGer. The rangers have no memories of who they are, so there is nothing to watch them grow or learn to overcome their fears because they don't know what their fears are or what they need to work on.

The thing I love about DaiRanger is that nobody wanted to be a ranger, but it was in their blood to be rangers, so they had to figure it out for themselves and go with it. The KakuRangers had team members that just wanted to have easy lives and have fun without any hardships and then had to learn that is not possible. The ZyuRangers were all royalty, so they did not have to fend for themselves and work together to accomplish anything as everything was handed to them on a silver platter. They had to realize that was no longer the case and work together in order to save the Earth.

Now GoGoV did a great job with taking five siblings who all worked for some sort of government agency and had them become rangers to protect the world. Yes, they weren't fully inexperienced, but at the same time, they weren't fighters, so they had to learn how to defend the world using their knowledge of their own careers.

I kind of agree with this. I feel like one of the reasons why I liked the heroes in Zyuranger so much was because I felt like they -should- be the heroes. After that, I watched Megaranger, and while everything else was cool, the heroes just felt like random kids they picked off the street (because that's essentially what they were). Of course, variety is a good thing, but just about every Marvel/DC super hero is exceptional in some way, which makes them interesting to watch/read/whatever. The first few shows (Goranger, JAKQ, Battle Fever J) all had trained soldiers/athletes/something else going inside the suit, which, while not as cool as ancient royalty like in Zyuranger, is more interesting than giving the red power to the first person they see like in Timeranger.

Of course, i'm not trying to bash on standard people becoming rangers - that will fit some people's tastes. However, the two most interesting Sentai i've watched up until now have been Zyuranger and Gokaiger, both of which had pre-formed teams, so I was thinking maybe I just find it more interesting than starting off by gathering members for a team.

But experience doesn't mean characters can't grow, maybe their arc wont be as sweeping as going literally from zero to hero but that isn't the only character arc that exists. That is the most boring of all character arcs, in my opinion, I must add.

Also Kouga is from the GARO franchise.

Everyone but Red was already a Ranger, they just kept their identities secret until Daigo raped their minds and bodies with friendship.

(NOTE: I guess Silver wasn't a Ranger yet, nor Gold, but even Cyan, Gray, Violet, and to a point Deathryuger already had their powers)

I'm pretty sure they all got their powers at around the same time, just slightly before Daigo. There was nothing to suggest they had previously fought before the first scenes.
