A lot of people would read an "S" as a "Z." The same kind of people who read "Khan" as "CAHN" instead of "خان."

Most English-speakers just aren't very good at pronouncing words and names from other languages.

When I made the mistake as a kid it wasn't a case of reading the s as a z, it was more seeing a "Ra" and instantly seeing that a as an "ah" sound.

Really, I think people should stop complaining about it. Most people have made that mistake at least once in their life. It's not that big of a deal.

Isn't that true of ALL languages though? After all, that's one of the things Romanization has to contend with.

For example, this same:

Is not the same same as same.

And The Jungle Book, King of the Hill and a particular German pop group have made sure I'll always pronounce "Khan" correctly.
