Personally, I think it's great that Kanji is not gay because he's a character that proves "feminine" things are not only something girls can enjoy and be good at. I think the message would lose a lot of impact if Kanji was actually gay, because gay people are considered feminine. Kanji unites both gender clichés without being much different than "average" males.
