Digimon started a virtual pet toy in the vein of Tamagotchis on June 26, 1997. The first Digimon came out on the Sega Saturn on September 23, 1998 and the anime came out on March 7, 1999. Digimon in Smash is possible, but I doubt it unless Namco Bandai wants to promote Adventure Tri.

Okay, but I still doubt Goku or Shrek will ever make it to Smash. Smash Bros is a series for video game characters. Goku is a anime and manga character. Everyone in Smash bros are video game characters first.
