Well obviously there are plenty of other groups out there for the not currently running shows. We don't really need more than 2 for that. The others groups are fantastic at the stuff they do but for current stuff we only have these 2 options.

Something else I'v noticed recently that irks me about the OT Gobuster subs is that every time Ryuji says Sempai they translate it to Masato? I mean we all know who he's referring to when he says sempai, why on earth would you translate it to the persons' name? This is one of those instances where there isn't a direct translation that would make any sense and the word should be left untraslated with a footnote.

I'm not saying that everyone knows what it is or even implying that. It's just weird to translate it to someones name simply because that's the context it's being used in. It doesn't make much sense to me. And I know they don't do footnotes. I wish they did, that's why I'm suggesting that it would make sense in this situation.

I don't see the issue with using the character's name in place of "Sempai."
It seems like having a problem with subbers leaving out "-San" and etc.
It's a term that we don't have a direct English equivalent, HOWEVER, it's also directly referring to a person, so rather than leaving a word untranslated and flipping off viewers who don't speak Japanese, they used the closest approximation, which would be to use the character's name in place of it.

I'm heavily biased against leaving in Japanese words thanks to my anime watching days, which would leave stuff like "Onii-San, Daijoubu, Hikkikomori (Fuck whoever decided this was a common enough word to leave untranslated, btw), etc" untranslated.

That's why I don't like that. It's not a translation, and it's not a transliteration. I'll take a transliteration with a note over a fake substitution any day.

I just have a problem with it because it's not a direct translation and there isn't anything that could be used in place of it. They just force it to be the characters name because there isn't a corresponding english word. But I don't see how that's better than just using the term with an explanation of why it can't be translated. Forcing the translation is just lazy on their part.

No, lazy would be just leaving it as "Sempai."

"Masato" may not be the clearest way to go, either, in fairness, and it did annoy me when OT's translated Hina calling her brother "Onii-chan" to "Shingo" back in OOO. In that case there was a clearer direct translation, though. With Ryuuji and Masato I would personally go with something like "teach" or "prof," since Masato had kind of been Ryuuji's mentor. Or maybe just something simple like "sir." Given how Ryuuji's usually less respectful and more exasperated with Jin, though, I think "Masato" does make sense as a translation.

Your personal tastes are not translation. Sorry.

Translation is about narrowing the amount of interchangeable words to find the appropriate equivalent. This is why you can't use something so informal as an "equivalent" to a term that carries some respect. No "teach" or "prof" or "boi" could be used to show respect to an upperclassman. "Sempai" is a term used for upperclassman in schools, coworkers with more experience, etc. It also isn't too formal because there have been friends who are more experienced in some places who are called by such a term. "Sir" is not a direct equivalent. "Upperclassman" seems to be the closest one, but people aren't accustomed to hearing it as a title.

"Masato" never is a translation. It is a transliteration at most.
