I've just started watching Dekaranger with my 7-year-old son. We've just finished episode 3, and he and I are enjoying it so far. (Among other things, we laugh at how Ban--with spiky hair, impulsive behavior, and red color--reminds us Momotaros.)

Anyway, I'm not sure why we decided to get into this even if we've watched several episodes of but haven't finished Go-Busters and Toqger, which are both shows we've been enjoying as well.

This got me wondering about my own tastes in Super Sentai, and how weird it is that I can't get into common themes like dinosaurs/animals and ninja. I think I prefer the stuff that's more explicitly technology-driven like, say, the other series I want to watch sometime soon: Timeranger, Go-Onger, Carranger, Megaranger, and (arguably) Boukenger. One exception to that would be Magiranger though...

Ban is where I felt the red rangers started to go down the tube. They went from being a mature bad ass leader to a loud mouthed, snot nosed childish brat.

You sure? Because BoukenRed was as dull as dirt, and that was only 2 series later.

There are a few exceptions, but Deka Red, Magi Red, Go-On Red, Gosei Red, Geki Red, Kyoryu Red, and Red ToQ were all obnoxious loud mouths. The only one that made sense for it from a writing standpoint was Geki Red, so I do give him leeway. However, as a whole, he is in there.

Bouken Red and Shinken Red were like the most generic you could get while Marvelous had a personality and a great side story with Basco.

What age did u start letting your son watch Sentai? And were subtitles a problem or did you start him with English versions?

Hi, Burakku Gaijin, he just started watching last year (maybe around the time he turned 7 or immediately after). He doesn't have much trouble reading the subtitles most of the time. We've seen (in their entirety) Gokaiger, Den-O, and Fourze. He's also seen the two Super Taisen movies, most of Gaim, bits of Toqger, Go-Busters, Decade, etc. Probably the biggest issue is that I have to warn him that he can't use the word "bastard" (or "bitch") in public.
