The show is basically what if the red ranger was a alpha male dudebro antagonist and the protagonist is the field leader of the evil organization's branch office of that town and was a soft-spoken gentleman with the hospitality of Ma and Pa Kent from Superman.
The show typically goes either the bad guys try to defeat him but Sunred beats them up and scolds them for their milk toast tone or they genuinely ask for help from one neighbor to another only for Sunred to beat them up and scold them. Either way they are scolded or beaten.

So, you want something like Evangelion? Then may I recommend Inferno Cop.

A bit more seriously, I’m currently watching Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS, which has as its main character a guy who went through a lot of sh*t no child should have to go through and a lot of the first season is him hunting down the people who put him through it, while the second and hird season go into him dealing with the other fallouts from that trauma (since he was only one of six victims and all of them were captured purely to make a new kind of AI… which were deemed a failure, basically kickstarting a man vs machine plot)

I remember watching VRAINS when it aired and continued to watch it as it went on. Definitely one of the best seasons they did (Though, I still have to finish 5D's). Kind of wish season 3 was a little better, but overall, it was a pretty good season.

Also, according to someone who worked on VRAINS, it was going to go full-on Evangelion, with a "bad ending."

I have an awareness of Yugioh, but I know so little about it aside from early dubbed episodes being on in the background years ago. Is VRAINS especially continuity heavy? Do I need to know much about the history of the world. I have to confess the idea of starting at a later series triggers my sense of I-must-watch-everything-in-order which puts me off a bit, lol.

That does sound appealing. Gosh, I realise that makes me sound like a particular kind of person who only gets engaged when someone throws around the term "bad ending" but I have to admit that's usually an important selling point for me.
