Nah, Ikki was maybe a little naive here and there, but I think he was actually a pretty strong leader character for his family, after all, the whole point was that he was kind of trying to put on a smiling face to shield his family from outside trauma/demons etc--I'm thinking more along the lines of Gentaro/Fourze or Alto/Zero-One, not that either of those shows were unbearably terrible per se... just for me personally, the main character being a kind of "slapstick"-based dumb ass is painful to endure for 50 episodes... I know that's a beloved trope in Japanese culture though, it shows up all the time in JUMP series...

I just much prefer the kind of "cool"/almost asshole-type main character who's very much aware of what's going on and uses the situation around them to their advantage etc

Most every show has serious moments. It doesn't change the characterization of the main characters being silly or goofy.
The entire plot to Zero-One is tragic, but Aruto is a silly character. Intentionally so as he uses his humor to overcome the negativity in his life, but still.

I have an idea that instead of getting new weapons with stronger forms, they plan to add new elements to the original one. That would explain why the gun looks so unfinished.

That, and while it's a little early to tell, it looks like there is a scanner in the gun. There is a card inside that maybe slides out? Either that or you can scan multiple cards like the Full Bottle Buster.

Speaking of the card, I can't really identify what it is, but it looks different than the other cards we have seen so far. Maybe there is an exclusive card(s) that come(s) with the gun
