It was a similar feeling. I wouldn't say it was downright offputting, but it felt Americanized. Perhaps it would have been worth moving the action to the US, especially since Ultraman has a history of Western adaptations, albeit a scant one.

I definitely found the quippiness of the dialogue the most aggravating part of the film, which is definitely a problem in a lot of modern American cinema, lol. The dialogue itself was also just not that good I think, and the fatherhood theme is well-trodden territory for the Ultra franchise at this point too. It just didn't have much to offer existing fans and doesn't seem like it would function as a gateway for many Americans to get into the broader franchise either. I'm not sure if setting it in the US would have saved the film given its deeper issues, but it would have at least offered the rare treat of seeing an Ultra fight in another country besides Japan.

Found out that Ultraman Trigger is now available to watch on Tubi just the other day. Make of it what you will.

I'm having real trouble with Kosei so far. Something about him just reminds me too much of Shunpei from KR Wizard and that's not a good thing.

It's only episode 5 and Kosei is cracking under the pressure of having to keep any info away from Ayu about Omega...and she's got a LOT of questions. Though probably for the best that Sorato turns himself into a delivery man and makes himself scarce!
Enter Miko! A surly, withdrawn, girl who lost her mother, her father is away for work, and she's stuck in the boonies with her kindly and doting aunt Sasako. She's not a bad girl, but she just doesn't have much going for her. Other than the "friend" she's made. Enter Mikoto! Or Ohebinushi no Mikoto! A Serpent God who in legends fell in love with a human woman...and now is best pals with Miko, who feeds it metal. And Sorato even joins in because he's just that much of a pal! Though Mikoto is getting more out of this friendship than Miko realizes... I don't think white streaks look bad on Miko, but it's a clear sign that something is up with her body and she's slowly deteriorating. And the source of it is, obvuiously, Mikoto. But she genuinely doesn't care if Mikoto, after it grows to its true size as Ohebinushi, the Serpent God, drains her dry so long as she doesn't have to live like this any more. Sasako may not know how to raise a child, but she knows that Miko is her family and she'll risk getting herself drained by Mikoto if it means saving Miko. I love how Kosei never even confirmed with Sorato that he would drive up to help bring him back, he just showed up because he's such a great friend. And because Omega might need Rekiness, but you know... It seems like Mikoto wasn't just a beast driven by its need to feed and drain energy from others...it seemed protective and caring towards Miko, and considerate towards her, trying to protect her and keep her safe. Even if that meant rampaging and committing suicide by Ultraman Omega and fading away into cherry blossoms. Kosei is acting like it's just another average Kaiju kill and Ayu is trying in vain to research what happened, but only Sorato might know the truth about what Mikoto was really doing. But, on the plus side, Miko and Sasako are closer than ever, flexing their mutual white highlights and Miko seems to have a new lease on living with her aunt. That's probably what Mikoto would've wanted for her. |

Really liked that episode of Omega. It was nice seeing Sorato go out on his own and the plot was an intriguing one. Mikoto is a lot like the kind of stories you hear sometimes, about someone who found a wild animal when it was cute and small, but as it grew up became accidentally destructive. It ends sadly, as many of these stories do, but Miko conmects with her aunt afterwards after seeing how much she cares. Sad, sweet, and hopeful. It is always fun to see them shoot out in the countryside too, and I was just very happy they did a proper serpentine kaiju! Kosei going after Sorato after he didn't call back was also one of those little narrative touches they didn't have to include, but I'm glad they did because it is on point for him as a character. (I feel like I am always closing these comments out by talking about Kosei. I like him, okay?

^I honestly don't blame you. I seriously liked Kosei as one of the show's lead characters and his dynamic with Sorato is great as always. Anyway, I think this might actually be Omega's best episode so far.

Gedrago! The Reckless Kaiju! Actually looks surprisingly cute aaaaaannd it's dead. That's kind of anticlimactic!
Kaiju saliva! As I live and breathe! Fumiya (Uh...thanks for using his first name in the subs I guess, Tsuburaya?) probably has a point that they got roped into studying and investigating stuff that they didn't go into science to actually research but does he have to be such a whiny baby about it? I love how Kosei will investigate Kaiju...after work. Provided said Kaiju isn't actively involved, then he has to run after (and almost lose) Sorato. Sorato and Kosei coming in like they're slasher villains. Kosei has an amazing intense yelling face. I'm really curious how Ayu is rationalizing all this insight Sorato inexplicably has for Kaiju. Sorato only just learned about the word "Challenge" and he's already using it to validate Ayu's current career path! "I can only sleep on a bed!" - proceeds to go out like a light. Poor Ayu. I know most people will focus on Sorato using Kosei's body for a pillow, but Sorato reaching out his hand into the sky makes me wonder if he longs to return home to space on some level. It's kind of funny how both Sorato and Kosei need to cover for why they run off for Kaiju battling. What a battle of comedic mishaps. Omega falls into a hole, Gedrago dodges his attack IN a hole, and pops up RIGHT next to Omega. Honestly questioned at first if we even needed Rekiness for this fight because the two of them tag-teaming Gedrago felt kind of like bullying? Well, other than Rekiness accidentally hitting Omega with his tail and Gedrago having a very shocking handshake. Gedrago's not a malicious or rampaging Kaiju, he just wants to find a mate! And luckily Ayu's knowledge as a biologist means she can recognize his similar mating behavior to a (not at all recolored suit) long mouthed mole! So Omega and Rekiness team-up to return the two Gedrago's home (though kind of a bummer if the female is actually dead)! Glad Ayu has found a new resolve to continue to research Kaiju, I mean at the end of the day most of them are just animals and sentient creatures, right? Can we keep Fumiya out of the investigation team? Next week: a new Meteor Kaiju and the return of GOMORA!!!! |

I think that was one of the weaker episodes of Omega so far, the comedic aspects were a bit forced and felt at odds with the more scientific aspects of the plot to me. I kind of sympathize with Ayu's coworker despairing over being forced into a new job, but he's so whiny about it it ends uo being more annoying than amusing. But I do like the idea that kaiju are simply animals and the whole bit at the end where Ayu talks about her sense of mission and curiosity towards these unknown creatures.

GOMORA THE ANCIENT KAIJU IS BACK! And he's wasting no time showing off why he was the first Kaiju to really give Ultraman a run for his money! He manhandles Omega, shrugs off Rekiness' TK, and blasts him with his Super Oscillation Wave! At least Sorato and Kosei can now commiserate in exhaustion over a failed battle.
Even Ultras can get colds! Or at least the equivalent of it since it seems like it's more the result of Sorato just feeling exhausted from fighting so much. So he overheated, basically? It's only been 7 episodes and people are already done with Kaiju and using AI deepfakes to deliver Ultraman Omega conspiracy theories. Wolfie is the worst kind of person. One who is only in it for the attention, no matter the facts or who he has to bring down to get it, and he takes no responsibility for his actions or behavior. Ayu really leaning into the Big Sis role by taking care of a sick Sorato, though sometimes I really wonder what she thinks of these two weirdos she hangs out with so much. But at least Sorato supports her career! Honestly, I have to feel for Gomora here. Bro was just hibernating and then Trigaron comes in, wakes him up, then he just has a hankering for hams. Can you really blame him? It's not his fault humans suddenly have civilization and cities in his way. Kosei just wants the next Meteor Kaiju, not to get chased by a youtube personality, high school girls, and a salaryman! Don't these people have anything better to do!? It's easy to sway the populace and public opinion when they don't know any better, but Kosei's faith in Sorato unlocks the next companion in their arsenal! Trigaron! A tiger Meteor Kaiju who is SUPER fast! Like he moves at light speed! I was wondering if Trigaron would be all CG, but there IS an actual suit! And the super speed is probably merciful on the suit actor so they don't have to film that much with him on all fours. I love how they acknowledge that Gomora's greatest weakness is removing his tail. Poor guy was holding it in frustration before he tossed it aside. The worst thing you can do to someone like Wolfie is stop paying attention to him and cancel him. I'm glad this really reinforced Sorato and Kosei's friendship as a Kaiju Fighting Duo. Next week: Trigaron Armor and Mons-Aghar returns! |
