I love how this episode pushes Tarou so far out of his element. Just, right off the bat, this is a pretty killer concept for an episode. You've got this character defined by his inability to tell or even comprehend falsehood, winding up in a position where he has to walk in that world, partaking in some elaborate and comical charade for the sake of making someone happier. Lots of great possibilities there. One of those possibilities comes from this being a show about a team, because the way Tarou's friends try to help him through the plan is as exactly as chaotic as I'd hope for. You get several sides of Shinichi in one episode, with his competence as the team's sorta sub-leader ultimately being undermined by his somewhat egotistical pride in his poetry. You get to see Tsuyoshi similarly mess things up by immediately forgetting he's supposed to be playing a role. And then you've got Haruka, whose attempt to salvage the mess literally kills Tarou. It's a Donbrothers plot if ever there was one! So that's the comic angle to this one, and it's obviously loads of fun. Just watching Tarou squirm his way through the act, awkwardly lip-syncing along to whichever voice happens to be speaking at that particular moment, assuming he isn't doing his own speaking over that. It's like the worst job of this the team could've done, and also the best. There's just no way a guy like Tarou could pull off this sort of deception -- anybody would see through it immediately. And that's kinda where the drama comes in, isn't it? Because the clear implication from the end is that Tomoko probably never really believed Tarou was her son, if not consciously, then at least deep down. Perhaps Tarou just seems like the kind of upstanding young man you'd *want* your son to be or something. I mean, I can't speak to exactly what Tomoko was feeling throughout the episode, either because I'm not smart enough or because I'm not crazy enough, but it's clear she felt a lot less lonely with Tarou around, and there's certainly something sweet in that. It's maybe a bit weird, but that's the case for everyone in this show, isn't it? So yeah, it's hardly a shocking opinion, but this is yet another episode of Donbrothers I had a great time with. Shirkarua's bit on the staff blog this week talks about how, apparently, Super Sentai usually makes a conscious effort not to progress the story too much during the whole summer break period, since less people are watching then, but telling that to Inoue only seemed to fire him up to write a bunch of "gag" episodes he knows he won't have time for later. And they're all really good. And reading that definitely puts a lot of the recent stories in context. We're definitely getting lots of episodes like this lately, where there's little capital "p" Plot happening in favor of some random funny concept forming the core of the narrative, but Inoue has proven to be very adept at having these silly standalone adventures still be grounded in the honest emotions of the characters, whether they're series regulars or one-off guest stars. It never feels like nothing is happening in this show, even when that's -- apparently -- what they're aiming for, and I can't think of any praise I could give that sounds more flattering than that. Donbrothers is so good, they can't make it less interesting even when they try to.

This episode was just fine, not bad, but not as good as the last episode or even some previous episodes. I decided to wait for subs, since this is an episode with a bunch of talking. I'd almost call this episode 'filler' but that might be too negative a term for an episode that I still enjoy. Anyways, the plot is centered on Tarou and this woman who thinks he's her son, and Saruhara and the others get Tarou to humor her, since ever since her son's moved away, she's been a lot sadder, but, Tarou can't lie, so Saruhara uses a mic to speak for him, which is a ridiculous enough idea that it's just what I'd expect from Donbrothers.
Of course, since it's Donbrothers, various hijinks ensue, ending with Tarou (actually Saruhara) promising to play the piano for her, which he can't do, but apparently Kaito has a whole piano room in the caf?, is this where the Zenkaiger secret room would've been? (I don't know, I've not seen Zenkaiger yet) But anyways, apparently Kaito can play the piano very well and the scene goes on way longer than you'd expect, but I'm not complaining. Suddenly, Ninjaki appears completely out of nowhere and with no introduction, which probably means he's someone important (spoiler alert: he is), and then he cuts up a bunch of people, leaving just their clothes, but Tsubasa comes in to save a child from getting slashed and then the Hitotsuki has vanished. We cut back to Tarou and the others, more hijinks ensue, with Saruhara getting mad at the mother after she makes fun of his haikus, and Tsuyoshi saying that he got married through Tarou, which also gets her mad since he never told her he got married. After hearing this, Kijino leaves too, leaving Haruka to handle the situation, she decides to go over there and pretend to be Tarou's wife, of course since he can't tell a lie, Tarou immediately dies/faints. Then Ninjaki reappears and the two go out to fight him, but then it turns out that Ninjaki is the real son (shocking, I know), and then we get a lot of fighting, and I don't have much to say on that. This was a fine episode, nothing too exciting, but still good enough. |

I kinda feel like saying it today, this show absolutely rules. So much fun every single week.
At this point in time, and god I hope it holds up, this could be among my favorites. Like, of all time. |

I caught up... Again!
And no joke, when Tsubasa turned into a dog, he looked exactly like one of my dogs here, so that was fun! All in all, last week's episode, I thought was going to be a cute gag episode, but turned out to be not quite as cute, but still very enjoyable. And seeing the use of Non-CGI InuBrother was a treat as well. Really clever how they can work around constantly using CG without resorting to changing into another Sentai Black. We also got Jirou's personalities splitting and debuting their Mech, which had a great debut, love how the Tiger is in a cage in the chest with the Armor holding it in place. *This* week's episode was more like what I was expecting from last episode, and actually delivered on that (again, I really enjoyed the previous episode). I just love how Shinichi (embodying Gendo Ikari) and Tsuyoshi were Tarou's wingmen (heh), who both rage-quit whence their passions got called out, and Haruka killing him. I figured the monster was going to be the son, but that didn't take away from the episode in any way. And I'm loving Robogoku, it was brilliant when it released the tiger. Also, Kaito and Tarou playing the piano was nice. Next Episode: "Tsuyoshi! You'r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-re fired!!!"
