Starting in June, a new drama show in Japan that deals with tokusatsu will begin airing. Set in the mid-1970s, Kaiju Club~Kuusou Tokusatsu Seishunki~(Kaiju Club~Fictional Special Effects Film Youth Chronicle~) follows Ryota played by Kanata Hongo(Prince Of Tennis, Gantz) and his club members who are passionate about tokusatsu and are dedicated to discuss the shows they love. Kaiju Club was an actual club that existed during that time period in Japan and this show is inspired by the club of the same name. The show will consist of 4 episodes and will air on MBS and TBS in Japan. The show will also have tokusatsu alumnis as part of the regular cast.
official website: http://www.mbs.jp/kaijuclub/ [CHARACTERS] Ryota/Kanata Hongo The protagonist of the show. As the ace of the club he is proud that he is passionate for tokusatsu and lives a tokusatsu-oriented life. He is secretly dating a university student he accidentally encountered named Yuriko unbeknownst to his club members. Throughout the show his challenge will be trying to balance both his love life and his tokusatsu life. Katsuo/Ryusei Yokohama(played Hikari/ToQ4 in Ressha Sentai ToQger) The high school student member of the club. Despite his young age he is well-versed in tokusatsu and threatens Ryota's title as the "Kaiju Club Ace". His critiques are genius and is admired by the club members. Shingo/Masato Yano Member of the club and Ryota's rival. He is passionate about tokusatsu and is proud to make his life all about the genre. He approves of Ryota's critiques, but at the same time is strongly driven to write good critiques. Yuusuke/Ryo Kato He is the club's conscience with a gentle personality. His soothing comments during even the most heated debates are considered a moment of refreshment. He is also an excellent artist making him in charge of drawing kaijus. Nishi/Shogo Yamaguchi(played Kenji Narukami/Ryukendo in Madan Senki Ryukendo) The Number 1 of the Kaiju Club and is in charge of organization. He can see through the members and is knowledgeable in music. Joe/Tokio Emoto The Number 2 of the Kaiju Club and is respected by club members for his caring of others and deep + logical thinking. Known to habitually say "anyways, calm down". Cap/Muga Tsukaji Editor and leader of the Kaiju Club. An enigmatic person who has a lot of info about the "Kuusou Tokusatsu Series(Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultraseven)". He has authority over things such as how to divide the pages, etc. Loves sweets despite his diabetes. Yuriko/Fumika Baba(played Medic in Kamen Rider Drive) Ryota's university student girlfriend. She starts dating Ryota after he saves her from the constant annoying flirts(though in reality it was all part of a butterfly effect that happened from Ryota kicking a can). She thinks of Ryota as a reliable grown man.

Color me intrigued. Honestly, I'm far more interested in how its made today, merchandise and all, rather the how it used to be made but I'm interested in this none the less. 4 episodes is about 2 and a half movies worth of time so I'm curious to see what they do with that.

Actually, Tsuburaya did a TV exclusive biopic of its founder and how the early shows like Ultraman was made long long ago, 20th century. What was really cool about that one was the cameo of Space Sheriff Shaider's actor(who is Eiji Tsuburaya's grandson) playing the role of Susume Kurobe who played Hayata/Ultraman.

I've been interested in this since I saw the article last month, it sounds like a really cool idea.
Tsuburaya is great at this stuff. There's actually another dramatization they made in the 90s about the creation and filming of Ultra Seven. |

Yep that is the one. The one with Shaider's actor/Eiji Tsuburaya's grandson as Susumu Kurobe.
