at this rate. we will probably get a proper opening once ranger eps are done.
Feels like we will get the Red-Blue friend/rivalry bond again this season.

I already knew we'd be getting some globetrotting this season to fully explore this cool fantasy world, it's a common trope for the genre. But damn, they're going fast! One kingdom per episode per Ranger focus doesn't feel like enough time to delve in to the cultures. This episode seriously wants to emphasize how Nkosopa is super cool and futuristic. And it succeeds, but also, it makes me want to spend a little more time there, instead of the narrative immediately shifting to yet another kingdom and then another and so on and so forth. By Episode 5, we'll probably have seen them all and I can't help but wonder, where we're going from there?
It's a good episode nevertheless. We've seen what a bad king looks like, so naturally this episode shows us what a good king looks like, albeit an unconventional one. The President-King Yanma is rude, impulsive and has a drinking habit and yet, he's loyal to Nkosopa and his subjects, who are loyal to him in return. It makes sense for him to be our first example of a good king, being the one to openly reject Racles' terms, tell him how much he sucks and refuse to negotiate with him. It's a serious blow to Racles' morale that a fellow king would side with a "terrorist", "usurper" and self-proclaimed King of Evil over him. I love how all these Rangers are strong leaders in their own right and I enjoy the competitive rivalry between Gira and Yanma. Hey, slow down there! Maybe wait until all 5 characters have been properly introduced before making your final judgment? Haha, yeah, I thought that was pretty unique.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of Yanma as a character but I find Nkosopa very fascinating to look at seeing as this show's politics do seem to matter more than I expected. The Bugnarak have very little to sell me as characters or villains and the focus on Racles instead intruiges me more and more. The episode seemed very fast paced which is understandable cause you want to get all rangers shown off quickly but I wonder if this will be too fast. However, one thing I found massively enjoyable was the action not just because it's fun seeing people in suita beat up other people in suits but there's loads of interesting shots taken which instantly reminded me of how Kamen Rider Build had fancy looking shots too, obviously being part of Kamihoruichi's style, which makes me unbelievably happy to see again.
Also what the hell is up with the CG department at Toei it looked really good here today too and I know Geats is showing off too

I'm not very familiar with Super Sentai compared to KR but I admit i didn't expect Yanma Gust to be so "friendly" so quick.
After Ep1 I thought his relationship with Gira could go either "wtf how is a random dude like you having an ohgercalibur now you're not a king" or "meh that Racles is evil so if you're his enemy, then you're a good guy" and I was surprised they indeed went with the latter, in a way, that fast (I thought it would take more time). actions scenes on groud look cool. I was more skeptical about mecha fights and CGI overload but it turns out being good too. Only nitpick is while in first ep it made sense for the shugods to be gathered in shugodom and the mech to be formed, it made less sense here (I imagine other countries being like "where the f*ck is my mantis/butterfly/Wasp God protector going ?) but I guess that's a sentai trope Im not enough familiar with. |

Alright. I absolutely love this show! And I'll rewatch these episodes again when I have time. Wow, it really is the ones I rewatch that I end up loving the most (last one was Zenkaiger).
A comment I didn't mention last episode, but I don't really hate Racles? Sure, he's a budding tyrant who wants control over the other kingdoms, but that's just about it? It's strange, I know, but I don't necessarily dislike him as the show intends, oddly enough. In a sense, he is right, just not in the right way, if that makes any sense. Now we got the Bugnarok introducing themselves and casually destroying the city in the process. I think the messenger guy voiced by Shinichiro Miki (his name escapes me) might be my favorite villain this season, but we'll see how things pan out first. But boy, does this season look to make the villains no joke. They're going around razing cities to the ground and murdering people, this is certainly welcome after the previous two seasons (nothing against them, I certainly love them). And I do enjoy how they're handling this Sentai Formation so far, seeing every ruler and their kingdoms and how they govern, to how they reflect on Gira, our wannabe villain protagonist (I really enjoy the villain act going on). And the action is much more dynamic, as seen by Reiwa so far, and it's all a joy to watch. Next Episode: "Gira! We've been transported into a Disney Movie!"

Something about King-Ohger isn't clicking for me yet.
It has all the pieces that I want: atypical heroes, awesome action, interesting worldbuilding, cool antagonists (well, Racles, at least), great mech and costume designs... on paper, it's got it all. But I don't know. The writing isn't doing it for me yet. The storytelling is a little rushed and chaotic, and I'm worried that hiring a writer so young to lead the show will lead to more growing pains than usual. Granted, Donbrothers was a hard act to follow, and I might not be giving King-Ohger the credit it's due. It probably just needs time to find its footing. After all, I generally find you can't judge the quality of a Sentai before like, episode 20. TLDR: King-Ohger has all of the raw materials for something great, but I want a bit more polish. We're only two episodes in, so that polish might come sooner rather than later.

I didn't watch Donbrothers, and in fact I don't think I've ever seen a Sentai in my life. I checked this out because the mecha design is rad.
I agree with Lucha, this show has a lot of solid elements let down by the connective tissue. The characters are interesting archetypes, but terrible performances and (so far) incredibly simplistic writing. The world seems unique and detailed yet hollow and superficial. (though this is something that can be mended over time) The suits and effects are quite good, but they blend terribly. I don't quite understand what the point of the extra arms in the control harness are for, and said harness seems entirely divorced stylistically from the mech or ranger suits. Also holy shit did Yanma cause absurdly unnecessary levels of collateral damage during his fight. This wouldn't have been so obvious had the show not established the collateral fallout of the last fight as a plot point, but there's no way lives weren't lost when he pointlessly pushed the Bugnarok through those two buildings. It's a very odd show. It seems a little... detached? The main character is a bit obnoxious in his hammy acting and his whole "I will become the Tyrant King" is pretty empty considering it's obvious he's speaking metaphorically to oppose the current order. It sounds edgy, but means nothing. I dunno, I'm more Rider fan than Sentai, so maybe this is par the course, but while it's not especially bad it's not especially good. |
